During this period, Irish monasticism was in the vanguard of Christian culture.The Book of Kells is a masterpiece of medieval art. It is a brilliantly illuminated copy of the four Gospels, with full page illustrations of Christ, Mary, and the four Evangelists. There is a wealth of smaller, decorative painting that seems to have little to do with the sacred text. The Book of Kells is an object of endless fascination for many, to the present. People are intrigued by the strange, half-surrealist imagination displayed, the impeccable technique, and the fine state of preservation.
