The collection covers the whole spectrum of blues, from beginnings in Texas, the Mississippi delta, Alabama and Georgia, as well as the female "city blues" singers of the mid-'20's, to later developments in Memphis, St. Louis and Chicago. The 68 illustrations, portraits of the singers by Jonathan Shahn have hitherto only been unavailable as limited edition. Of the first edition, one hundred copies were signed by the anthologist, and one hundred illustration proofs were pulled and signed by the artist. This one of those special copies.
