The Crossing, takes place before and during the Second World War and focuses on teenage cowboy Billy Parham and his family, following Parham on a journey to return a she-wolf to her home in the northern Mexican mountains. The novel is noted as more melancholic than All the Pretty Horses, although not as dark as McCarthy's previous work.
