Description:
Honolulu: University Of Hawaii Press, 2009. Paperback. New. An unusual study of a side of Singapore life, its penal history, that's usually forgotten about. In this work Pieris demonstrates the importance of convict labour to the city following the abolition of slavery in 1833, when prisoners from India were imported to fill the gap. However the inmates' labour was just one part of their usefulness to their warders. The different ethnic communities within the prison system were also managed as an experiment for a planned plural society in the colony. The successes and failures of this attempt at social engineering and their relevance to the make up of modern Singapore are also examined. New Paperback 354 pages.
