From the publisher

Dr. Gum's ill-fated flight crashes in the dense Amazon jungle near Leticia en route to a scientific conference in Lima, Peru. Amongst the cargo is the latest advance in laser science, a genome-gathering device to retrieve the genetic sequencing of vanishing tribes indigenous to the region. Five survivors crawl from the wreckage, Dr. Gum and Linda Sovereign, a rival firm technology specialist, amongst them. The genetic gathering device is presumed lost. The forlorn victims struggle in their harrowing ordeal yet miraculously find their way to the Amazon water's edge and are rescued by a scientific expedition deceptively disguised as an unassuming riverboat. The journey takes them deeper into the heart of the jungle. The expedition is impeded by a military reconnaissance mission who interrogate them relentlessly to determine their intentions. The victims must soon fend for their lives and flee. They narrowly escape and come across a private secluded hunting lodge. Is the lodge an illicit cover up for some grander garish operation or is it a closely guarded secret by the locals? The privately funded facility has seemingly supported all local development. What dark secrets await the survivors of the crash?

About the author

Bernie Unrau a dentist and doctor by training, stumbled across a four minute video back in 1989, an interview with the prolific Robin Cook, a physician by training. Cook's mastery of the medical thriller inspired Unrau to embark on a 2nd career. The central character in Unrau's novels, Dr Gum, is part bumbling lieutenant Columbo, part deductive Sherlock Holmes, part Dr. Ryan from Tom Clancy's novels, and part curious Indiana Jones. Unrau brings some of his years as a dentist, lecturer, and inventor to light by engaging in espionage, elucidating an enigma, disclosing a dastardly or diabolical scheme, or dreaming up a formidable frightening future. Unrau currently resides in Calgary, Alberta.
