Robinson Crusoe Paperback - 1999

by Daniel Defoe

About this book

Robinson Crusoe was first published in April 1719, in London. In the beginning, the story was published as an autobiography, but it was later established that the author was Daniel Defoe. The novel became an instant classic, with four editions printed in the first year of publication. Often called the first English novel, it follows the story of Robinson Crusoe, a man marooned on an island. Crusoe’s adventure-packed story of survival started the genre of realistic fiction and inspired a slew of other survival novels. Over the course of its publication history, Robinson Crusoe has become the second-most translated book in the world.

From the publisher

Presented in their complete text and updated for easier reading, each story in the Great Stories Collection is truly unique. Each has been rigorously critiqued and selected for the quality of its Christian content, the value in its message, and its ability to bring and bind a family together. In-depth introductions detail both the authors and the times in which they lived. Many books feature original woodcut illustrations. Complete with thought-provoking questions, these books are keepsakes to be treasured for years to come. Perfect additions to the adult fiction section. When "Robinson Crusoe" first set sail, he became so violently ill that he vowed never to return to the sea. But when the sea gave its call, return he did . . . until the day Crusoe found himself a shipwreck's sole survivor, thus beginning his 24-year exile on a castaway island. Yet when he considered the good and the evil of his situation, Crusoe found he had much to be thankful for. "Robinson Crusoe" is the incredible story of one man's triumph over crippling fear, doubt, and loneliness, which resulted in an amazing revelation-God is always with us.

First line

I WAS born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, though not of that country, my father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull.

First Edition Identification

True first editions of Robinson Crusoe are exceedingly rare and valuable. When the book was first published in April 1719, people read it so often that most copies have since fallen to pieces. The first edition was published by William Taylor at the Ship, a place of publication on Paternoster Row, a street in London home to the city’s publishing trade. The octavo book is bound in crushed red morocco.
