El aloe (Spanish Edition) Paperback -

by MANSFIELD, KATHERINE

From the publisher

Portraying the quandaries of colonial life in New Zealand through the story of one family's move from Wellington to a small rural town, this masterful novella is partially autobiographical, and parts of it were incorporated into Mansfield's acclaimed story "Prelude." Though the Burnell family relocates a scant six miles from the city, the move is far from inconsequential; in fact, it causes a major disruption to their former way of life. Beneath the Burnells' harmonious front are undercurrents of aggression and tragedy. A mysterious aloe plant and the slaughtering of a duck in their well-kept yard suggest that the family is concealing brutality and ignorance of another way of life that was rejected--that of the Maoris, the rightful owners of the colonized land. The novella describes the author's sense of unease from belonging to the group of invaders.
