Countess Dracula

Parry, Michel

London: Redemption Books, 1995 Novel about the bloody Countess Elizabeth Bathory that was adapted for the cinema by Hammer Films in the 1970s. Based on the legend of Countess Bathory, the notorious Transylvanian who bathed in the blood of young virgin peasant girls in a vain attempt to preserve her fading youth. With photographs by Chris Bell. Based upon the screenplay by Jeremy Paul derived from Valentine Penrose's The Bloody Countess. "In medieval Europe aging Countess Elisabeth rules harshly with the help of lover Captain Dobi. Finding that washing in the blood of young girls makes her young again she gets Dobi to start abducting likely candidates. The Countess - pretending to be her own daughter - starts dallying with a younger man, much to Dobi's annoyance. The disappearances cause mounting terror locally, and when she finds out that only the blood of a virgin does the job, Dobi is sent out again with a more difficult task." Countess Elizabeth Bathory. Vathek

Beckford, William

London: Creation Books, 2000 A crawling meditation on the transgressions of the depraved. Witches, demons, human sacrifices and other spectral horror all mark the progress of Vathek as he journeys to the underworld on his pilgrimage to the underworld, where his sins and damnations flower into eternal torture. First published in the late 18th Century in French, William Beckford's Gothic classic Vathek was revised by the author in 1816. The book includes lithographs by the symbolist artist Odilon Redon, complementing the bizarre text and making this the most completely decadent edition available in print. Vathek features an illuminating introduction by Jeremy Reed discussing both the text and the eccentric life of William Beckford, a youthful millionaire who spent his fortunes on building the ultimate Gothic folly, where he indulged in such homosexual vices that he was finally exiled from England. William Thomas Beckford (1 October 1760 - 2 May 1844), usually known as William Beckford, was an English novel ... Read more

Returning to America he continued to study Sanskrit at Harvard University for a year, contributed to various periodicals, and in 1882 produced his first novel, Mr Isaacs. This book had an immediate success, and its author's promise was confirmed by the publication of Doctor Claudius: A True Story (1883). After a brief residence in New York and Boston, in 1883 he returned to Italy, where he made his permanent home. He also published the historical works, Ave Roma Immortalis (1898), Rulers of the South (1900) renamed Sicily, Calabria and Malta in 1904, and Gleanings from Venetian History (1905). The Saracinesca series is perhaps known to be his best work, with the third in the series, Don Orsino, set against the background of a real estate bubble, told with effective conc ... Read more

London: Creation Books, 2005 Bram Stoker’s classic best-seller Dracula was first published in 1897. But in 1901, Stoker revised and edited the book for a new English edition. Stoker’s aim in this revision was to tighten the novel, cutting out a lot of the slower-paced and dialogue-heavy scenes. Overall, he reduced the wordage by 15%, a significant change. Since this was the last work Stoker did on the book, it stands as the final and definitive author’s cut, but has been out of print since that first edition over a century ago. All other editions in print use the out-of-date text of the 1897 edition. The new Creation edition of the definitive Dracula is enhanced by the inclusiuon of Stoker’s story Dracula’s Guest, originally planned as a chapter of the novel but excised before publication, and also by an introduction written by Bram Stoker himself in 1901 and first published in the Icelandic edition of Dracula. This new definitive edition of Dracula is the only such version in print a ... Read more

The Book of Vampires

Wright, Dudley

New York: Dorset Press, 1987 This first serious study of vampirism in the English language. The author is clear and concise; he presents a plain, unvarnished survey of this terrifying supernatural phenomenon. This is the best introduction to a weird and horrifying subject." This book was first published in 1914 in England, a revised and enlarged edition appeared 10 years later, and this book has been reprinted from this last edition. The book assembles reports of vampires of all ages and from all countries, and discuses various theories of vampirism. Vampires from Arabia, Greece, Rome, Russia, Serbia the British Isles, and even America are discussed. In addition to traditional vampires there is a chilling description of Living Vampires, sorcerers who travel at night in an imperceptible form to feed upon victims before returning to their own living bodies. An unusual book. Facsimile of the 1924 study of vampire folklore.. First Thus. Hardcover. New/New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
