History of the Earth and Animated Nature

GOLDSMITH, Oliver

London: J. Nourse, 1779. Eight volumes, octavo; profusely illustrated; a handsome set in contemporary tree calf, spine elaborately gilt, gilt dentelles. This work by the eminent novelist and essayist Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) provides a remarkable snapshot of the late-eighteenth century.New Holland had just been discovered and is represented by the "Kanguroo" (after Stubbs), quaintly described as being: "often known to weigh above sixty pounds, and must consequently be as large as a sheep." A number of now extinct species, including the dodo, are featured. Goldsmith includes descriptions of various human races: Laplanders, Chinese, Africans, North American Indians, pondering the human condition with chapters on "Sleep and hunger", "Old Age and Death". Most of the information is taken from secondary sources, yet in Goldsmith's accessible prose it is rendered charming. His "chief ambition is to drag up the obscure and gloomy learning of the cell to open inspection; to strip it from its garb of austerity, and to shew the beauties of that form, which only the industrious and the inquisitive have been hitherto permitted to approach". Goldsmith's history was incredibly popular and went through over twenty editions, this being the second (published posthumously). He was held in sufficient esteem by Johnson as to offend Boswell and of whom Thomas De Quincy wrote "All the motion of Goldsmith's nature moved in the direction of the true, the natural, the sweet, the gentle"

An History of The Earth, and Animated Nature.

Goldsmith, Oliver.

8 vols. London: J. Nourse, 1774. 8 vols., 8vo, [2], xviii, 401; [3], 399; [4], 403; [4], “538” (i.e. 358); [4], 400; [4], 406; [4], 368; [4], 200, [334, index] pp. 101 plates, of which 28 are engraved by Elias Martin [1739-1818], and 73 by Isaac Taylor [1730-1807]. Contemporary calf, red and green morocco labels, marbled endpapers, yellow edges. Bindings gently worn, upper hinges of 3 vols. cracked, others tender, internally clean. A very good, unsophisticated set. First edition, first issue with p. 91 in vol. 2 uncancelled (see below). “Oliver Goldsmith’s An History of the Earth and Animated Nature has been described as everything from ‘hackwork’ to his ‘most substantial literary legacy’ ” (Wardle, 1957). The first edition (in eight volumes) appeared in London in 1774 and was pirated in the same year. The work sought to draw together virtually all that was known about the planet earth, its plants and animals, and even its human inhabitants described from a biological perspective. Although Goldsmith drew almost all of his information from the work of other naturalists, he set out with a very Romantic goal in mind. He had first planned to translate Pliny’s Natural History and then, after reading Buffon, he decided that “the best imitation of the ancients was to write from our own feelings and to imitate nature.” The linking of emotion and mimetic imitation to the natural world echoed precisely the claims poets would be making for the next century. Goldsmith’s Animated Nature went through over twenty editions into the Victorian era; though it can be criticized on technical grounds, the work became the source of what countless individuals in the English-speaking world knew about the natural world around them. Goldsmith wrote with clarity and precision; for example, he admitted one of the most common confusions in natural history of the period in his discussion of the “border” between plants and animals: it frequently puzzles the naturalist to tell exactly where animal life begins, and vegetable terminates; nor, indeed, is it easy to resolve, whether some objects offered to view be of the lowest of the animal, or the highest of the vegetable races. The sensitive plant, that moves at the touch, seems to have as much perception as the fresh water polypus, that is possessed of a still slower share of motion. Besides, the sensitive plant will not reproduce upon cutting it in pieces, which the polypus is known to do; so that the vegetable production seems to have the superiority. Goldsmith weighed in on the side of those who believed that all human varieties derived from a single species, admitting however that great changes seemed able to occur in individual members of a species, including our own. His entire discussion of humans takes place, significantly, in a section of his work entitled “An History of Animals”: “If we look round the world, there seem to be not above six distinct varieties in the human species, each of which is strongly marked, and speaks the kind seldom to have mixed with any other. But there is nothing in the shape, nothing in the faculties, that shows their coming from different originals; and the varieties of climate, of nourishment, and custom, are sufficient to produce every change.” Dr. Johnson wrote an epitaph in Westminster Abbey that affirms natural history’s importance in Goldsmith’s canon: “To the Memory of Oliver Goldsmith, poet, naturalist and historian.” (Ashton Nichols). Nissen ZBI, 1621 (calls for 94 plates). Ward & Carozzi, 932. Freeman 1352. Anker 167. Tinker 1137. Wood, p. 362. Lowndes notes that a leaf was cancelled which describes the famed mathematician Maclaurin as constantly yawning (vol. 2, p.91/2).

A history of the Earth and animated nature

GOLDSMITH, Oliver

Glasgow: Blackie and Son, 1840. Each volume with frontispiece and additional engraved title. With 35 full-page engraved plates (1 folding) and numerous text woodcuts. Diced russia, spine labels (torn on Volume 2); interiors with some spotting and light foxing to preliminaries and last few leaves. The editors of this edition chose "to publish the History of the Earth and Animated Nature without transposition of any kind, but to supply, in the shape of notes, whatever was found necessary for the correction or illustration of the text, including descriptions of the different systematic arrangements of the Animal Kingdom adopted by the more distinguished naturalists. By this method, the reader would have the satisfaction of possessing, in its entire and unaltered state, the celebrated work of Goldsmith, accompanied, at the same time, by a fund of additional matter, which would bring down the history of the subjects treated of, and all the recent important discoveries connected therewith, to the present day" (from the preface). Goldsmith (1728-74) was the son of a Church of England clergyman who later served as a model for the preacher in The deserted village. Goldsmith studied at Trinity College in Dublin, where he barely earned his B.A. in medicine. After being rejected for the clergy, a generous uncle sent him to Edinburgh University to study medicine, but instead of taking a degree, he traveled through Europe. It is from these travels that Goldsmith drew the inspiration for his great novel, The Vicar of Wakefield. He later returned impoverished to London where he initially practiced medicine, and later devoted his full time to writing. Throughout his life he struggled with a bad gambling habit, leaving him more often than not impoverished, and with a debt of over £2000 after his death.

Full leather binding; edges ruled in gilt; red and black title blocks on the spine, also ruled in gilt. Clean text; 399 pages; illustrated. Pages toned but very clear and unfoxed.
