A Passage To India

By Forster, E M

A Passage to India by E.M. Forster is considered a monumental work of English Literature. The book tells the story of race and empire in India during the British Raj. A false accusation of sexual assault based on racist English assumptions forms the basis of the story. Dr. Aziz, a Muslim physician, is accused of assaulting a young woman during an expedition to Marabar Caves. The trial and ultimate consequences of the accusation expose the deep problems with British governance in India during this period, and the depth of feeling opposed to British rule among the Indian people. The book has received several awards, including the James Talt Black Memorial Prize in 1924, and is present on several lists of the best books of the twentieth century.

First edition identification and notes

The novel was first published by Edward Arnold, in London in 1924. The trade edition was comprised of 5,000 copies in a red cloth binding and a plain printed wrapper. A limited edition of 200 copies was issued as well in brown cloth, each numbered and signed by Forster.

Signed copies of the red cloth edition in fine or near fine condition can range in value up to $4,000 or $5,000, with the limited edition in brown cloth demanding $5,000 and higher. First American editions are generally priced up to $2,000.

A Passage to India.

FORSTER, E. M.

London: Edward Arnold & Co.,, 1924. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. Spine sunned, minor rubbing to extremities, covers lightly bowed, a few minor marks to covers, contents lightly toned. A good copy. First edition, first impression. An appealing Bloomsbury association copy, being the copy of Frances Partridge (1900-2004), Bloomsbury Group member and acquaintance of Forster, with her pencilled ownership signature to the front free endpaper (using her maiden name Frances Marshall), and with her pencilled shelf mark to the front pastedown. "Having just finished A Passage to India, and needing to escape from his own demanding mother in Weybridge, Forster had become Frances' mother's lodger in Brunswick Square. It had been Vanessa Bell's idea; Ray and Bunny Garnett, now with two small sons, had moved to a house of their own, Hilton, near Cambridge. Frances had written a disrespectful account of Forster to Colin Mackenzie when he moved in, remarking on his 'twisty nose, and little giggle' and deploring his choose of 'pathetically suburban looking furniture'... Forster and Frances never really took to each other, and his books were never among her favourites" (Anne Chisholm, Frances Partridge: The Biography, 2009). Partridge remained slightly dismissive of Forster in her recollections of the Bloomsbury set - "E. M. Forster appeared to dress himself carefully to look like 'the man in the street', in impossibly dull grey suits... the sentimentality which is sometimes distressing in his books never appeared in his conversation or his letters - even the wording of a postcard announcing the time of his train had originality, as did his handwriting. He accompanied his most amusing remarks with a look of anguish and a high explosion something like a sneeze, which seemed to express amusement and self-depreciation at one and the same time" (Partridge, Love in Bloomsbury, pp. 83-84).

A Passage to India

Forster, E. M.

London: Edward Arnold & Co., 1924 First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark red cloth, lettered in black. About near fine, with a bright spine, a touch of rubbing to the extremities, spine starting at the title page, heavy spotting to the page edges and the first and last leaves of the text block, some scattered spotting to the otherwise bright pages. Overall, a very sturdy copy, with a much cleaner binding than usual. Kirkpatrick A10a. A Passage to India is one of Forster's most successful novels and the winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1924. Set in British India during the independence movement of the 1920s, the story is a symbolic criticism of British colonialism interwoven with lengthy descriptions of India's natural physical beauty and mystique. A Passage to India was Forster's last novel published during his lifetime. It was adapted into a film in 1984, the last film written and directed by David Lean, starring Judy Davis, Victor Banerjee, and Peggy Ashcroft.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

A PASSAGE TO INDIA

Forster, E[dward]. M[organ]

1924. London: Edward Arnold & Co., 1924. 3 pp undated ads. Original deep red cloth lettered in black. First Edition, trade issue, of Forster's famous novel of India, in which the English community is portrayed as quick to condemn an Indian doctor accused of assaulting a young Englishwoman.~...Forster's most famous novel, and the last one he wrote... There was considerable criticism of his portraits of the English in India. Forster made a humane and liberal Englishman, Fielding, a rare exception and this was less than fair. But his diagnosis of the less than perfect relationship of the Indian to his Anglo-Saxon overlord as arising from insensitivity and arrogance on the one hand, and generations of endured rudeness and condescension on the other is accurate as a factor in politics, as many non-Englishmen can testify. Forster was frequently asked why he stopped writing novels [he lived 46 more years]: 'I have nothing more to say,' he replied. [CGEL]~This is a "trade issue" copy because there were also 200 numbered copies issued in paper-covered boards (no precedence).~This volume, without half-title as issued, is in near-fine condition, with only the slightest of rubbing at the extremities (and at one small spot at the bottom of the front cover). There is much less than usual fading on the spine -- typically a problem for this deep red cloth -- and a bit of foxing only on the leaves at each end. Kirkpatrick A10a; selected as #25 in the Modern Library 100.
