African Game Trails

By Roosevelt, Theodore

Theodore Roosevelt declined to run for reelection as President of the United States in 1908. Partly as a vacation, partly to avoid the press as his friend Taft set up a new administration, (and partly for self-promotion), T.R. set out for Africa to hunt big game and collect specimens for a future exposition at the Smithsonian. Scribner's magazine underwrote the trip by paying $50,000 for twelve articles. It is these articles that eventually became African Game Trails. In April 1909, T.R. and his son Kermit arrived in Mombasa. With an entourage of 250 porters and guides, the Roosevelts spent a year snaking across British East Africa, into the Belgian Congo and back to the Nile, ending in Khartoum. This narrative is a straightforward chronicle of the trip, laced with tips on tracking and hunting African big game, and observations and opinions about Africa and its peoples, many of which are politically incorrect by today's standards. T.R. believed in the inferiority of most African peoples and recommended they be civilized by European rule. For the most part, however, African Game Trails is a book about big game hunting. Over the course of the year, the Roosevelts collected (i.e. shot) 1,100 specimens, including eleven elephants, twenty rhinoceroses, seventeen lions, twenty zebra, seven hippopotamuses, seven giraffes, and six buffalo. This was a different era, to be sure. In a way that makes the account all the more valuable. African Games Trails is well-written and rolls along easily, like a good, long, after-dinner story. It is also a striking record of early 20th-century African culture and natural history. It is great fun and highly recommended for the non-squeamish.

African Game Trails.

ROOSEVELT, Theodore.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1910. 2 volumes, large octavo. Original brown half pigskin, pale grey-brown sides, untrimmed. With the dust jackets, card chemises and original slipcase. Photogravure portrait frontispiece, 47 photogravure plates (8 of them from drawings by the great wildlife artist Philip R. Goodwin, the rest "from photographs by Kermit Roosevelt and other members of the expedition"), all with captioned tissue guards; title pages printed in red & black. Contemporary presentation inscription on front free endpaper of volume I, light tan-burn from the corners to the endpapers, slipcase and chemises with splits now professionally restored, some staining and minor stripping from old tape repairs, however overall a remarkably well-preserved set of this handsome production. First and limited edition, number 129 of 500 copies signed by the author, printed on Ruisdael Paper by the De Vinne Press. Absenting himself from politics for a year, Roosevelt set off on an elaborate hunting trip to gather specimens for the Smithsonian. The huge party, including over 250 porters and guides, was partly underwritten by Scribner's who gave Roosevelt a $50,000 commission for a series of 12 articles on the safari which form the basis of this book. The party crossed British East Africa, into the Belgian Congo, and traced the Nile across the Sudan to Khartoum. "Lavishly illustrated, African Game Trails was irresistible to readers who could stomach the meticulous descriptions of bullets drilling hearts and brains. Even those who could not... had to concede that Roosevelt was scientific in his scrutiny of every aspect of the African wilderness, and often movingly lyrical. The density of recorded details, whether ornithological, paleontological, botanical, or anthropological, was almost overwhelming. Most came not from notes, but from the author's movie-camera memory, which in advance of any system yet available in nickelodeons, registered both sight and sound. Over and above its documentary appeal, the book exuded a kind of savage romance new to American readers" (Edmund Morris, Colonel Roosevelt, 2010). Sets in such collectable condition and with the surviving chemises and slipcase are most uncommon.

African Game Trails

Roosevelt, Theodore

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910 First edition, first printing. Presentation copy; signed and inscribed by Roosevelt on the front endpaper to Zoologist and Ornithologist, Arthur Lennox Butler: "To A.L. Butler Esq/ with the thanks and/ regards of Theodore Roosevelt/ Nov. 1st, 1910". With a two-page autograph letter from Roosevelt to Butler. Original publisher's brown gilt-stamped cloth. Some fading and dampstaining to spine, split to lower spine at rear joint, else very good. Housed in a quarter-leather custom folding box. Arthur Lennox Butler (1873-1939), son of ornithologist and bird collector E. A. Butler (1843-1916), was Curator of Selangor State Museum, Malaya and had one bird and four species of reptiles named in his honor, including the East African venomous snake, Chilorhinophis butleri, or Butler's two-headed snake. It was during his appointment as Superintendent of Game Preservation in Sudan (1901-1915) that he met Roosevelt as he led the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition in 1910. Roosevelt's two-page autograph letter is written from Gondokoro (Southern Sudan) on 27 February 1910: "Dear Mr Butler/ We have obtained white/ rhino, giant eland, buffalo,/ roan &c. We'll have little/ time to hunt now/ Mohammed has proved/ excellent; just what we/ needed. I'll send you the 100 piastre/ you so kindly advanced/ as soon as I can get/ a check book"./ With hearty thanks,/Sincerely yours/ Theodore Roosevelt." Only three weeks after he was succeeded as president by William Howard Taft in 1909, Theodore Roosevelt embarked to British East Africa on The Smithsonian East Africa Expedition. Roosevelt was accompanied by his son Kermit, who served as official photographer and to whom this text is dedicated. The expedition collected over 20,000 specimens, which would take the Smithsonian over eight years to catalog. During the yearlong trip, Roosevelt wrote monthly report articles about the expedition for Scribner's Magazine; in 1910, the articles were published in book format as African Game Trails.. Signed by Author. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

ROOSEVELT, Theodore.

New York:: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910., 1910. 8vo. xv, 529 pp. Frontispiece, 49 illustrations, index. Gilt-stamped brown cloth; front corner bumped, spine faded. SIGNED BY ROOSEVELT on removable White House letterhead cardstock in tipped-in cellophane sleeve verso frontispiece. Bookplate of Charles A. Gianini. Near fine. FIRST TRADE EDITION of Roosevelt's iconic classic on big game hunting. "Hunting in the Pleistocene wild, Roosevelt believed, let him bravely face down the 'hideous horror' of the eat-or-be-eaten struggle for survival which his Stone Age ancestors had faced. Here he could experience the pure, original emotions of primal masculinity. Like G. Stanley Hall, TR found in the violence of the primitive a safe way to relive the 'hot life of feeling' which civilization had demoted as 'unmanly.' "Roosevelt had personally killed 269 mammals during his safari, including thirteen rhinos, eight elephants, seven hippos, seven giraffes, and nine lions. At the end of African Game Trails, he lists each kill, modestly insisting 'we did not kill a tenth, nor a hundredth part, of what we might have killed had we been willing'" (Bederman, p. 211). "With his son Kermit on the 1909 safari, Roosevelt shot and collected a great deal of game for the Smithsonian and National Museums and was a keen recorded and observer of everything he saw. His account of the safari has its share of the exciting, dangerous moments expected in this type of hunting, but the. . .work is rich with descriptions of the quieter pleasures of safari life, from campfire scenes to reflections on bird-watching" (Underwood, pp. xvii-xviii). Illustrations from photographs by Kermit Roosevelt and drawings by Philip R. Goodwin). "In March 1909, shortly after the end of his presidency, Roosevelt left New York for a safari in east and central Africa. Roosevelt's party landed in Mombasa, British East Africa (now Kenya), traveled to the Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) before following the Nile up to Khartoum in modern Sudan. Financed by Andrew Carnegie and by his own proposed writings, Roosevelt's party hunted for specimens for the Smithsonian Institution and for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The group included scientists from the Smithsonian and was led by the legendary hunter-tracker R.J. Cunninghame and was joined from time to time by Frederick Selous, the famous big game hunter and explorer. Among other items, Roosevelt brought with him four tons of salt for preserving animal hides, a lucky rabbit's foot given to him by boxer John L. Sullivan, an elephant-rifle donated by a group of 56 admiring Britons, and the famous Pigskin Library, a collection of classics bound in pig leather and transported in a single reinforced trunk. All told, Roosevelt and his companions killed or trapped over 11,397 animals, from insects and moles to hippopotamuses and elephants. These included 512 big game animals, including six rare white rhinos. The expedition consumed 262 of the animals. Tons of salted animals and their skins were shipped to Washington; the quantity was so large that it took years to mount them all, and the Smithsonian was able to share many duplicate animals with other museums.
