Afternoon of an Author: A Selection of Uncollected Stories and Essays

Fitzgerald, F. Scott

Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Library, 1957 Introduced by Arthur Mizener. First edition, first printing. One of 1,500 copies. Publisher's light brown cloth, text supplemented with photographs and facsimile manuscript materials; in the original light gray dust jacket lettered in maroon. Book about fine; in unclipped dust jacket, with some faint hints of light toning to the edges, bright and fresh panels. A tight and attractive copy, unusual in such excellent condition. Bruccoli A22.I.a. Afternoon of an Author is a collection of writings from American author and Princeton University graduate F. Scott Fitzgerald. Specifically, it includes 14 short stories and 6 essays published over the course of 20 years, 1920-1940. The text is illustrated with reproductions of photographs and manuscript materials, including images of Fitzgerald at Princeton and travelling with Zelda. The selection is edited by Arthur Mizener, the author of the first Fitzgerald biography The Far Side of Paradise (1951), and each piece is introduced with his notes. Fitzgerald often drew on his own experiences for his writing, making these short stories highly autobiographical. The essays contain, as Burke Wilkinson writes in his 1958 review for The New York Times, "more of the fanciful and fictional." This true first edition published by Princeton University precedes the Scribner edition and also includes more; the three stories about Pat Hobby are omitted from later editions.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
