ALL THE SAD YOUNG MEN

Fitzgerald, F. Scott

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. Green cloth, lettered in gilt and blind. Expert restorations to spine extremities and joints, light foxing to prelims, small discoloration at top edge of first several leaves, but a good, sound copy. Half morocco slipcase. First edition of this collection of short stories (presumably the earliest printing, with no signs of type deterioration on pages 38, 90 and 248). Inscribed by Fitzgerald on the front free endsheet: "For Anne Ober [/] Hoping that none of her descendents will be sad young men [/] F. Scott Fitzgerald." With the ink signature of Harold Ober on the opposite pastedown. Harold Ober served as F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary agent beginning in November 1919, and until the end of Fitzgerald's career, as his confidant and friend. Anne and Harold Ober were particularly significant in providing support for Scottie Fitzgerald after Zelda was hospitalized. There are a few small pencil notes in the table of contents. A fine association copy. BRUCCOLI A12.I.A.

All the Sad Young Men.

Fitzgerald, F. Scott

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition, first issue of Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories. Octavo, original green cloth. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with the woman's lips unbattered (Bruccolo, A12). All the Sad Young Men is the third collection of short stories written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published by Scribners in February 1926. Fitzgerald wrote the stories at a time of disillusionment. He was in financial difficulty, he believed his wife Zelda was romantically involved with another man, she had suffered a series of physical illnesses, and his play The Vegetable had been a failure. Upon publication--and somewhat belying the notion that Fitzgerald's most famous novel had not been enthusiastically received--the New York Times wrote, "The publication of this volume of short stories might easily have been an anti-climax after the perfection and success of 'The Great Gatsby' of last Spring. A novel so widely praised -- by people whose recognition counts -- is stiff competition. It is even something of a problem for a reviewer to find new and different words to properly grace the occasion. It must be said that the collection as a whole is not sustained to the high excellence of 'The Great Gatsby,' but it has stories of fine insight and finished craft." Ironically, in a letter nine months earlier, Fitzgerald had advised his editor Max Perkins against publicizing the book through the newspaper. "Rather not use advertising appropriation in Times--people who read Times Book Review won't be interested in me."

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First Edition, First Issue. Hardcover. Octavo., 267pp.; VG/VG; dust jacket spine tan with black lettering; price uncut; green cloth boards, bright gilt lettering on spine; This is a true first issue of the first edition: the date on the title page, 1926, matches the date on the copyright page. As nice of a copy as we've ever seen; interior clean; RD Consignment. Shelved Case #2. The author's third collection features nine short stories. "The Rich Boy" contains one of Fitzgerald's most quoted passages: "Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand". As with his other collections, its release was timed to follow the completion of his most recent novel, The Great Gatsby. As nice a copy as we've ever seen. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.

All the Sad Young Men

Fitzgerald, F. Scott

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926 First edition, first printing, with no damage to the type on pp. 38, 90, and 248 (later printings display battered type), and in the first state dust jacket with the unbattered lips. Publisher's green cloth, stamped in blind to front board and in gilt to spine; in the original pictorial dust jacket. A near fine book with extremities lightly bumped and some toning to page edges, else very clean and bright; in a very good unclipped dust jacket, some splitting to front fold and rear edge of spine panel, two small closed tears at front fold, some shallow chips to corners, top edge, and spine head, with some damp-staining and one tiny hole to spine panel, not affecting text. Overall, an exceptionally nice copy in the fragile dust jacket. All the Sad Young Men is Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories, and includes the following nine titles: "The Rich Boy," "Winter Dreams," "The Baby Party," "Absolution," "Rags Martin-Jones and the Pr-nce of W-les," "The Adjuster," "Hot and Cold Blood," "The Sensible Thing," and "Gretchen's Forty Winks." All the Sad Young Men was published a year after Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, but interestingly, it includes a pseudo prequel to the iconic novel. In the story "Absolution," Fitzgerald provides a unique glimpse into Jay Gatsby's childhood as James Gatz. This chapter was eventually excluded from The Great Gatsby in order to keep the title character shrouded in compelling mystery.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition. Fine/Very Good. A Fine copy of Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories. Either second or third issue with battered type on pgs. 38, 90 and 248. Book square and sharp, with brilliant gilt on the spine panel. In a Very Good dust jacket with a large chip at the top of the spine (no titling affected), and the front spine fold cracked and repaired with reversible, archival tissue. Very little battering to the lips of the woman on the front panel. Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories, written during a time of great difficulty. Around the time of the publication of All the Sad Young Men, Fitzgerald had just experienced a number of personal failures - including illness and debt. Despite this, the collection would include some of his most notable shorter work. Among them are "Absolution," a story that was originally written as a kind of beginning to The Great Gatsby and "The Rich Boy" which noted Fitzgerald scholar Matthew Bruccoli describes as "Fitzgerald's most important novelette." "The publication of this volume of short stories might easily have been an anti-climax after the perfection and success of 'The Great Gatsby' last spring...but it has stories of fine insight and finished craft." Fitzgerald, F. Scott

New York & Philadelphia: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. Ex-Los Angeles Department Store Library. 1st edition early - probably 1st printing and 1st state. The typeface is not battered on Pg. 38 lines 6-9; not battered on pg. 248 lines 21-24 and the page number 90 has no battering anywhere and the 90 is distinct. 267 pages. Dark-green mesh patterned cloth. Blind-stamped front cover- Spine title in faded gilt. Scribner's seal on the copyright page along with the 1926 on the title page and 1926 on the copyright page. This book is made interesting by the addition of a Dept Store printed label applied to the very front cover of the book measuring about 4 inches long by 1 3/4 inches wide stating "The Broadway Department Store/Broadway Fourth and Hill Arthur Letts, Jr. President READER'S LIBRARY." Inside is a larger library type label: "This Book is the Property of The Broadway Department Store Reader's Library Books One and Two Cents A Day - No Membership Fee/Time Limit on all Books 30 days ......" Customers had to put down an 8 cent deposit on two-cent a day books and 5 cents deposit on one-cent-a-day books. This rare Fitzgerald 1st state printing - was for rent as a two-center. There is also an ink rubber-stamped number 40973 on the inside front pages and a portion of the original dust jacket inside flap or possibly back cover panel has been glued to the free endpaper. Most interesting - fair condition - a neat addition to a Fitzgerald collector's library I would think. These "flaws" of a famous local Los Angeles department store ex-library rental book: - in this case are cool and photogenic as a display.. 1st. Hardcover. Fair to Good/No Jacket. 8vo.
