An American Tragedy

By Dreiser, Theodore

An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser fictionalizes a famous murder that happened in the 1906 murder of Grace Brown by Chester Gillette. His version tells the story of Clyde Griffiths, a confused and irresponsible young man. Clyde uses his position as supervisor to take advantage of a young woman, Roberta, who has fallen in love with him. Clyde falls in love with another woman, Sondra, who could provide him an entrance to society. Robert becomes pregnant, and after failing to get her an abortion, Clyde schemes to murder her when she insists on marrying him. Clyde is arrested, tried, and ultimately executed. Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005 list, and it is considered a classic of American crime fiction.

AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY

Dreiser, Theodore

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. The trade edition in two volumes, as issued. Precedes the limited edition by a year. Much scarcer in nice condition, in our experience, than the limited. One of Dreiser's most acclaimed books. Made into the 1931 film of the same name and 1951's, "A Place in the Sun," starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters. This enduring classic is a Haycraft-Queen title and on Time Magazine's 100 Best Novels list. Based on the notorious 1906 murder of 20-year-old Grace Brown. Chester Gillette, who claimed Brown's death was accidental, was convicted of her killing in a trial that drew international attention. (Wikipedia) Bright and fine in bright dust jackets much nicer than usually seen. The jacket on volume one with chip at base of spine filled in but otherwise both jackets are very nearly fine. In the original gray paper-board slipcase with printed paper label pasted to one side. Slipcase shows general wear and minor repair to hinges but is still quite good. Scarce in original slipcase and this nice condition. MUCH SCARCER IN THIS NICE CONDITION THAN THE LIMITED

An American Tragedy (Presentation copy)

Dreiser, Theodore

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. Limited Edition. Very Good +. Two volumes in original publishers' boards. One of 795 deluxe copies, this one marked for Presentation, signed on the limitation page and additionally inscribed on the title: "For Mary Gold, who slaved on this. Theodore Dreiser." An excellent copy in all, with an important association. "Dreiser is widely regarded as the strongest of the novelists who have written about America as a business civilization. No one else confronted so directly the sheer intractibility of American social life and institutions, or dramatized with such solicitousness and compassion the difficulty of breaking free from social law. Dreiser had a genius for factuality: he recreated the inner workings of a factory, a stock exchange, a luxury hotel; he was definitive" (The New Yorker). Among the greatest of his works stands An American Tragedy, with its emphasis on sexual obsession and unquenchable desire. Indeed, the despair that characterizes the novel seems to stem from Dreiser's own troubled Catholicism and fascination with true crime. "The germ of the novel was a newspaper story of 1906: A young man was convicted of drowning a pregnant girl in Upstate New York...Dreiser clipped accounts of the case and brooded over it for years" and in the end he hoped to create "a crime sensation of the first magnitude, with all those intriguingly colorful yet morally atrocious elements -- love, romance, wealth, poverty, death" (The New Yorker). Very Good +.

An American Tragedy.

Dreiser, Theodore

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First editions of both volumes of Dreiser's epic tragedy. From the library of American novelist Wallace Stegner, with his signature to the front free endpaper of both volumes. Often referred to as "The Dean of Western Writers", Wallace Stegner taught at both Harvard and Stanford University where he founded the creative writing program; his students included Sandra Day O'Connor, Robert Stone, Ken Kesey, and Larry McMurtry. Stegner's novel Angle of Repose won him the 1972 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction; and in 1977 he was awarded the National Book Award for The Spectator Bird. Octavo, 2 volumes, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. An exceptional association linking two highly influential 20th century American novelists. Based on a notorious 1906 criminal case, Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy tells the story of the ambitious, handsome, yet ill-educated Clyde Griffiths and his gradual descent. A tragedy in the strictest sense, Clyde's destruction begins with seduction and ends with a death sentence. The novel has been adapted several times for film, stage and radio, although not always attributed. Critics and commentators have compared elements of Woody Allen's film, Match Point (2005), to the central plot of the novel as well as the 1951 Paramount Pictures film A Place in the Sun, directed by George Stevens and starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, and Shelley Winters.
