Anne Of Green Gables

By Montgomery, L M

Anne of Green Gables is the first novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. The story tells of the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in Prince Edward Island.

Like many of her contemporaries, Montgomery did not consider submitting her first novel to a Canadian publisher, convinced that a more lucrative deal could be made with an American firm. The novel was completed in 1905, but was rejected by four major American publishing houses, and it was not until 1907 that Montgomery found a publisher. L.C. Page & Co. finally published Anne of Green Gables in 1908.

Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into more than 30 languages. Following the success of her first novel, Montgomery went on to write seven more books about Anne, following the beloved protagonist through adulthood and motherhood. Several novels in the series have been adapted and made into a successful television miniseries. Montgomery museums, plays, and houses on Prince Edward Island draw international visitors.

Montgomery, L.M

Boston: L.C. Page, 1908. First edition dated "April 1908" on the verso of title page. Octavo, original brown cloth, titles to the spine in gilt and front panel. Mounted pictorial label on front panel. Illustrations by M.A. and W.A.J. Claus. First edition copies are generally found in the more common green cloth bindings. (Peter Parley to Penrod, p. 124) In excellent near fine condition, showing some light wear to the extremities and front panel. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Anne (with an "e") has been stealing the hearts of readers generation after generation since it was first published in 1908. At that time, there were not many great female protaganists in novels, but there was a great audience of women readers who fell in love with this bright and extremely imaginative red-headed orphan. The book was an immediate sensation and the series followed. It's one of these most beloved girl books ever written, having sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and translated into at least 20 languages. It has also been adapted into numerous films, television series, and plays. "Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?"

Montgomery Macdonald / April / 1926. Illustrated by Elizabeth R. Withington. Bound in the publisher's ribbed light teal cloth, with gilt lettering to the front board and spine, illustration of a woman's profile to the front board, publisher's advertisements at the rear of the text. A very good copy, with wear and light rubbing to the extremities, bright spine, spine cracked between the half-title and the frontispiece, otherwise intact spine, small piece of tape to the rear pastedown. Second edition from / new plates, made in 1925: / the old plates of the original / edition in 1908, being worn / out. With new illustrations. / L. M. Montgomery Macdonald / April / 1926. Illustrated by Elizabeth R. Withington. Extremely Rare - Inscribed by the Author. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. Additionally inscribed with a former owner's provenance note to the front pastedown: "This book, autographed by the / author, was presented in 1948 to / Sister Mary Kathleen, then superintendent / of nurses, St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, / by the author's son, Dr. Stuart / Macdonald, member of the / Staff of Obstetrics and Gynaecology [sic] / St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada. / To Franie / Affectionately / Aunt Amy / Dec. 13, 1977". Overall, a clean and attractive copy with strong provenance. The only signed Anne of Green Gables we have seen. After inscribing the book, the author bequeathed this copy to her son, Dr. Stuart Macdonald, who presented this volume to the nursing superintendent at the Toronto hospital where he worked. In turn, the nurse gave this copy to "Aunt Amy," who chronicled the book's ownership history in her inscription. Aunt Amy gifted this book, and additionally inscribed it, to Franie. Franie passed the book down to the step-mother of the most recent owner. The personal nature of this volume's provenance emphasizes the rareness of a signed copy of this title. The author's inscription relates to Elizabeth Withington's eight illustrated plates, including one frontispiece. The earliest editions of Anne of Green Gables contain illustrations by W. A. J. and M. A. Claus. All three artists were painters working with a variety of mediums, meaning their works had to be copied by printers for mass reproduction. By 1925, the printer's plates of Claus' work had been used to the point that they were no longer producing clear images. Rather than making new plates from the original Claus illustrations, Withington created new original illustrations for the subsequent printings. Although the choice of illustrator was likely made by the publisher, Montgomery's inscription, which is accompanied with a small cat silhouette illustration, implies she was rather fond of Withington's artwork. Anne of Green Gables is a story about a young orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who is sent to live on a farm on Prince Edward Island with a family who had intended to adopt a boy. Montgomery drew much of the novel's setting from her own childhood experiences living with her grandparents on the eastern coast of the island. Like her readers, the author was quite taken with the jovial character she had created and wrote multiple sequels to this first installment of what would become a beloved children's series.

MONTGOMERY, L. M.

Boston: The Page Company, 1920. 49th Impression, April 1920. 349th thousand. Hardcover. Good. viii, [2], 429 p. + 8 p. of ads. 20 cm. 24 b&w photographic plates from the lost 1919 film starring Mary Miles Minter. Cloth with pasted-on illustration. Hinges tender and front is separating a little front text block at bottom. Some edge wear and soiling. Tear at top of p. 199. Occasional thumbing and soiling to pages. This film edition is extremely rare. Stills from the 1919 film Anne of Green Gables are well-placed throughout the text in association with events in the book. The silent film version differs immensely from the original novel: it features a shotgun-wielding Anne, a skunk (an animal not found in P.E.I.), and changes to the cause of Matthew's death. Nevertheless, the film, Minter's first for director W. D. Taylor, met with great success. All prints of the film were destroyed in the aftermath, making "Anne of Green Gables" one of Hollywood's famous lost films. It was Minter's self-declared favourite role, adapted by famous female screenwriter Frances Marion. It was shot in Dedham, Massachusetts, with Green Gables represented by the Fairbanks House. Montgomery was not a fan of the film, despite its excellent reception.

Anne of Green Gables

Montgomery, L. M.

Boston: L. C. Page and Company. Very Good. 1913. Thiry-Fourth Printing. Hardcover. x, 429, [6], 2 p. 20 cm. First published in June 1908, this is a 34th impression printed in January 1913. Sound and square binding, in green, cloth-covered boards with paste-down illustration on upper board. Cracked in gutter, where the previous page meets the rear of the frontispiece, but it is not broken through the mull and is still holding well. Gilt titles are still quite bright, moreso on the spine. Tiny stain streak at the foot of the spine. Corner tips have light wear and the bottom fore-corners are lightly bumped. Paste-down illustration has some light rubbing and a few scratches. The text block edges are tanned and the top edge darkened by soil. Lightly soiled overall. Inside pages are generally clean and unmarked, with some rippling which is only noticeable in running fingers across pages. There is about a 10 page section that has a small stain mark on either the bottom margin or the front margin, none affecting the text. The title page has slight darkening along the line of the tissue guard for the frontispiece (which is foxed). With all its faults, it is still an attractive copy of an early printing of this novel. The first book in Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved Anne series, about a red-haired girl adopted into the lives of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on Prince Edward Island. Includes eight black and white illustrative plates. Eight pages of publisher's ads at rear. .
