The original watercolor for one of Stecher-Traung's beloved seed-packets. — The 'Spencer' sweet pea is associated with Althorp in Northants: It was the fifth earl's gardener, Silas Cole, who noticed the new variety there in 1898, named it Countess Spencer, and sent 2200 seeds to America in 1903 — ancestors, I suppose, of the individuals pictured here.
