The first feature film from the husband-and-wife team of Jean-Marie Straub and Daniele Huillet.

An austere portrayal of the life and times of Johann Sebastian Bach, depicted by renowned harpsichordist Gustav Leonart, consisting largely of excerpts from Bach's works, presented in chronological order and linked by a fictional journal written by his second wife Anna Magdalena Bach, depicted by Christiane Lang. The musical works are often presented in single immobile takes in the locations where the works premiered.

Shot on location in Eutin, Freyburg, Hamburg, Leipzig, Lubeck, Luneburg, Nuremberg, Preetz, and Stade, Germany.
