About This Item

New York: Film Forum 2, 1988. Portrait photograph of director Maurtiz Stiller, circa 1930, to promote Film Forum 2's two-week series "Sjostrom & Stiller: The Screen's First Masters," which ran from November 11 through November 24, 1988, at Film Forum 2 in New York.

Maurtiz Stiller, born in Helsinki, Finland, was a Swedish director, writer, and actor, who, along with Victor Sjostrom created the AB Svensk Filminspelning production company in 1922. He directed 51 films in his lifetime, with a short-lived career in Hollywood (1925-1927), having a tumultuous relationship with MGM and Paramount executives. Stiller is also of note for having directed the "Gosta Berlings Saga" in 1924, featuring an 18 year old actress Greta Gustafsson, and is frequently credited with giving her the stage name Greta Garbo. The two traveled to the US to work with Paramount to make "The Temptress" in 1926, and remained friends for the rest of Stiller's life.

8 x 9.75 inches. Near Fine.
