Original photograph - Schalekamp, J.M. (1844-1912). Gorinchem. De Linge. Amsterdam, J.M. Schalekamp, ca. 1890-1900. ca. 22.5 x 16 cm.

Very rare original photograph by Johan Marinus Schalekamp (1844-1912), one of a group of original photographs which were used to make a picture postcard. We have traced some of the executed picture postcards, greatly reduced images of our original photographs. Schalekamp was one of the largest (possibly even the first) publishers of Dutch topographical picture postcards around 1900. He was active in Haarlem (1870-1879); Amsterdam (1881-1893) and Buiksloot (near Amsterdam, 1893-1912). He had a photographic studio, a (photo)lithographic and book printing office from 1893 onwards. Not only did he print his own picture postcards and books, but he also worked for other publishers.

Very good copy. Provenance: Bought by a Dutch collector of photography in the 1960s, beginning of 1970s. Titled in pencil on verso. RKD; Wachlin 2011, Vol. 2, p. 517 (as: Schalenkamp, Johan Marinus).

1889. Very Good. 2 albumen prints. The first, Rouen--Fontaine de la Grosse Horloge, is 255 x 199 mm. on a cardboard mount (297 x 239 mm). Caption printed in photograph in lower right: "54. Rouen_Fontaine de la Grosse horloge." Written in ink at lower edge of image: "Rouen, August 25/89." Written in pencil next to photograph on mount: "Printed by the house of T. Herlyison." The fountain was designed by Jean-Pierre Defrance and built next to the famous Gros Horloge in 1743; the bas relief depicts the mythological scene of the river Alpheus and the nymph Arethusa, and Cupid flying above them. This photograph includes a man waiting for a bucket to fill at the fountain and a woman carrying a bucket and moving off to the right. The window to the right of the fountain says "Debit de la Fontaine." The second photograph (209 x 270 mm), on the other side of the card mount, is an albumen print identified along the lower mount edge as only "Rouen." It… Read More

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are… Read More
