E-01: Henry Holt & Company. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1943. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Henry Holt and Company. 1943. 361 pgs. First Edition/First Printing. Illustrated with line drawings. Signed and inscribed by Crockett Johnson on the FFEP. DJ has light shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards lightly rubbed and worn with some light discoloration present to the crown of the spine. "The most important addition to American arts and letters in Lord knows how many years." — Dorothy Parker. Reproduced in full color and featuring Mr. O'Malley, McSnoyd, Gorgon, Gus, and other delightful comic creations, here are 13 of the most popular Barnaby adventures. Includes the famous scrap iron drive and the hot coffee ring escapades. Barnaby was a comic strip which began 20 April 1942 in the newspaper PM and was later syndicated in 64 American newspapers (for a combined circulation of more than 5,500,000). Created by Crockett Johnson, who is best known today for his children's book Harold and the Purple Crayon, the strip featured a cherubic-looking five-year-old and his far-from-cherubic fairy godfather, Jackeen J. O'Malley, a short, cigar-smoking man with four tiny wings. With a distinctive appearance because of its use of typography, the strip had numerous reprints and was adapted into a 1940s stage production. The usually caustic Dorothy Parker had nothing but praise: "I think, and I'm trying to talk calmly, that Barnaby and his friends and oppressors are the most important additions to American Arts and Letters in Lord knows how many years." E-01; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 361 pages; Signed by Author .

Barnaby: J. J. O'Malley Goes Hollywood (#6)

Johnson, Crockett

New York: Ballantine Books, 1986. First edition. Mass Market Paperback. Fine. One of the scarcer paperbacks from a major publisher in the 1980s. Barnaby was a wonderful cartoon of the 1940s, Ballantine reprinted the strips in the 1980s, in six volumes -- they did not sell well, despite the efforts of some booksellers to get them into the hands of those who would appreciate them. The problem with the current price on these volumes is that new folks won't get the chance to read them and discover the joys of this kindly strip. Go out and buy the two hardbacks from the 40s; then come back and round out your collection with the Ballantines, the later ones of which reprint otherwise unavailable tales. This is an excellent copy, with slight browning of the paper and only the very slightest of reading creases, invisible except in a strong side-light. tw

Johnson, Crockett (David Johnson Leisk)

Chicago, IL: Henry Holt and Co.. Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket. 1943. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is a light slant to the spine of the book. The text pages are clean and bright. All edges of the text block have noticeable foxing. The dust jacket is clean and bright but does have a couple of small spots of discoloration and some light toning to the rear panel along with one small semi-closed tear to the bottom front spine joint. "For those who have not yet formed the habit, we herewith report that BARNABY is a picture strip about a little boy named Barnaby who wanted a fairy godmother, and wished upon a star. What he got was a fairy godfather, with pink wings and a paunch, named Mr. O'Malley. Now Mr. O'Malley is, we hope, untypical of fairy godfathers. He smokes cigars - usually filched from Barnaby's Pop." "Crockett Johnson (October 20, 1906 – July 11, 1975) was the pen name of the American cartoonist and children's book illustrator David Johnson Leisk. He is best known for the comic strip Barnaby (1942–1952) and the Harold series of books begun with Harold and the Purple Crayon. From 1965 until his death Johnson created over a hundred paintings relating to mathematics and mathematical physics. Eighty of these are found in the collections of the National Museum of American History." .

Garden City, U.S.A: Blue Ribbon, 1942. The book is slightly cocked and there is a warp to the bottom cover. The edges show wear and the pages are dusty on the edges.Especially the top edge. Some of the pages are rough cut. There is a price in pencil on the first page that could probably be erased. There is also a pencil note on the inside back cover. The back outside cover shows staining (probably a water stain) All this being said, the binding is solid and tight. The cartoons are neat and well done. The jacket is orange with 5 reviews of the book on the back. The back flap is a neat "wartime" blurb..."This book...like all books...is a symbol of the liberty and the freedom for which we fight. YOU...as a reader of books...can do your share in the desperate battle to protect those liberties. Buy WAR BONDS". There is extensive chipping and tears along the top and bottom edges of the jacket. The back of the jacket has a rip that is running from the bottom towards the top for about 2 inches.. Hard Cover. Good/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
