Black Beauty

By Sewell, Anna

First published under the full title: Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions. The Autobiography of a Horse. Translated from the Equine, by Jarrold and Sons London in 1877, the novel now known as simply Black Beauty was written by English author Anna Sewell. The first American editions from 1890 have the added title 'The “Uncle Tom's Cabin” of the Horse' as promoters of the novel hoped it would do for animal welfare what Stowe's novel did for the abolition of slavery.

Anna Sewell was born in 1820 in Great Yarmouth, England. She suffered an accident as a child that left her crippled and dependent on carriage horses as her main source of mobility. She began writing Black Beauty in 1871, and continued through 1877 though her health was deteriorating. In December 1876 she wrote in her diary "I have been confined to the house and to my sofa, from time to time, when I am able, been writing what I think will turn out a little book, its special aim being to induce kindness, sympathy and an understanding treatment of horses". Her mother, Mary Wright Sewell, was a successful children's author, and Anna helped edit her books, and later her mother helped Anna transcribe Black Beauty.

An animal autobiography, told by the magnificent black horse himself, this is the dramatic and heartwarming tale of Black Beauty's life-from his idyllic days on a country squire's estate to his harsh fate as a London cab horse. Although not originally intended as a children's novel, but for people who work with horses, it soon became a children's classic. Two years after the release of Black Beauty in the United States there were one million copies in circulation. Today Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books in history, with over 50 million copies sold in 50 different languages.

The earliest dated inscribed copies are Christmas 1877. Although the book was an immediate bestseller, Sewell lived just long enough to see her first and only novel become a success – she died on 25 April 1878.

SEWELL, Anna.

London: Jarrold and Sons,, [1877]. Translated from the original equine. Octavo. Original brown cloth, rebacked with original spine laid down, spine and front board lettered and decorated in black and gilt, rear board blocked in blind, brown endpapers (Carter's B binding), edges trimmed. Housed in a custom red morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Housed in a custom dark red folding case, front cover with a panelled onlay of Black Beauty. Engraved frontispiece after C. Hewitt, 8 pp. publisher's ads at end. Tips restored, worn, inner hinges reinforced, occasional soiling, a well-read copy, good. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in her own hand on the first blank, "For the Patients of the London Temperance Hospital with the Author's best wishes", and with a secondary ownership inscription ("Hughes") above. Conceivably this is John Hughes (1827-1896) who was treasurer of the London Temperance Hospital for about 25 years. A very apposite association: the London Temperance Hospital, in Hampstead Road, London, opened on 6 October 1873 by initiative of the National Temperance League, and was managed by a board of 12 teetotallers. Anna Sewell and her mother were both heavily involved in the temperance movement and the theme is strongly invoked in Black Beauty. This Victorian classic was the only book of its bedridden author, who died shortly after its publication, much too soon to appreciate its slowly accumulated worldwide success. Presentation or inscribed copies are understandably rare and the majority are not inscribed by the author herself, but by her mother Mary. In 1938 Carter distinguished three states of the binding: A with the same blocking as this, but all in gilt; B, as here, with the horse's head, titling, and the rustic portions of the decoration in black (Carter mistakenly describes the titling as gilt, which invariably leads to the B binding being described as a variant), the other parts being gilt; and C, blocked in black and gilt, with a much smaller horse's head gilt in a medallion, facing left, the same design as used for the later editions. Carter A and B are primary, and the earliest dated inscribed copies are Christmas 1877. Anna Sewell died on 25 April 1878.

London: Jarrold and Sons, 1877. First edition, first printing, published by Jarrold and Sons in 1877. Carter's variant C binding. The book is firmly bound in the publisher's brown cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and black. The boards are a little marked with some light repairs to the corners and spine ends. The text block is a little foxed and toned - the gutters show repair - some corners of the pages have been repaired. 247 pages with 8 pages of adverts to the rear. The 'C' binding was probably the standard trade issue, with 'A' and 'B' being either publisher's presentation bindings, or a more expensive deluxe issue. The text block and ads appear to be the same for all three. A presentable copy of a rarity.

Anna Sewell

The Autobiography of a Horse. Translated from the Original Equine.Published by Jarrold and Sons, London; 1877. First Edition, First Printing. This is the incredibly rare first issue of the first edition of the beloved children's classic Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell. Engraved frontispiece. Bound in the original red cloth binding with gilt and black design [variant of Carter's B binding]. Preserved in a Fine red morocco folding case. The hinges are splitting a little and there is some wear to the corners and edges, as well as down the edges of the spine. There is some rubbing to the boards, but overall they are bright and smart. Inside, there is some foxing to the pages, although generally this does not affect the text, and a few page corners are creased where they have been folded. There is a pencil annotation to the inside of the front board and another to the front free endpaper. There is a little chipping to the paper affixed to inside of the front board and the splitting to the spine can be seen inside the front board, and again in the centre of the book. The pages are, however, remarkably bright and clean apart from the age marks, with the 8 pages of publisher's advertisements at the end. Despite the mentioned issues, this is a lovely, collectible copy of this extremely rare first edition of Anna Sewell's only publication. She completed the novel, in spite of her ill health and sold it to her mother's publishers for £40, who published it on 24 November 1877 when she was 57. She wrote it for those who worked with horseswith the aim 'being to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses' (Mrs Bayly, 272) and it has gone on to become one of the most cherished children's classics.

SEWELL, Anna; [KEMP-WELCH, Lucy, Illustrator]; BATNTUN-RIVIÈRE, binder

London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd., 1966. Anna Sewell's Black Beauty Finely Bound by Bayntun-Rivière Beautifully Illustrated by Lucy Kemp-Welch SEWELL, Anna. Black Beauty. Illustrated with 8 colour plates and many line drawings by Lucy Kemp-Welch. London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd., [1966]. Later edition. Octavo (8 1/16 x 5 1/4 inches; 204 x 134 mm.). xii, 226 pp. Eight full-page color plates and numerous black and white line drawings throughout the text. Bound ca. 1966 by [Bayntun Rivière] for Brentano's in full blue polished calf, covers with double gilt borders, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in compartments, two red morocco gilt lettering labels, gilt board edges, gilt-turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled end-papers. Small neat book-plate on front paste-down. A fine copy. A superlative copy of the classic - and quite novel - story of a horse, told in his own words, wherein he recounts his life as a well bred steed from early childhood in a pleasant meadow, through numerous owners - some kind and some cruel - until fate returns him to the meadow in which he was born. Though animal autobiographies had been published before for children, Black Beauty stands apart from those in that it offered social criticism of his various owners. Because of that, the book was read, appreciated and loved by adults as well as juveniles. It has never been out of print since its original publication, has been adapted to the screen on fourteen different occasions, and has forever fostered and cemented the special bond between young girls and horses. Ultimately, Black Beauty's continual and lasting value is as one of the first - and certainly most influential - arguments for the humane treatment of animals. "Beauty's color is no accident (Sewell's book is clearly modeled on Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, 1852), and the most poignant moments in the narrative occur when Beauty, while recognizing the inevitability of servitude, nevertheless longs wistfully for freedom" (Robert Dingley, in Nineteenth-Century British Women Writers, p. 354). "Anna Sewell (1820-1878), author, was born on 30 March 1820... her 'life of constant frustration' (Mrs Bayly, 71) began when, aged about fourteen, she slipped and fell... injuring both her ankles [that led to] a lameness which, although varying in its severity, was permanent and meant that at times she could not walk outside or stand for very long. She also suffered from a debilitating invalidism which varied in its intensity but remained with her for life characterized at times by pains in her chest, loss of strength in her back, and a 'weakness' in her head leading to periods of 'enforced idleness' (Mrs Bayly, 245).
