This scarce copy of Muriel Spark’s “The Comfor

This scarce copy of Muriel Spark’s “The Comforters” is inscribed by the author to his friend Hugo Manning. "Love to dear / Hugo / from / Muriel," she writes in blue ink on the front free endpaper. Manning (1913-1977) was a poet, journalist, and occasional artist, as well as a great friend of Spark's. The character of Solly Mendelsohn in Spark's 1981 novel "Loitering with Intent" is based on Manning as an affectionate tribute to him.
