Bonfire Of the Vanities

By Wolfe, Tom

Sherman McCoy is a WASP, bond trader and self-appointed 'Master of the Universe'. He has a fashionable wife, a Park Avenue apartment and a Southern mistress. His spectacular fall begins the moment he is involved in a hit-and-run accident in the Bronx. Prosecutors, newspaper hacks, politicians and clergy close in on him, determined to bring him down. The Bonfire of the Vanities is a caustic satire on the money-feverish Eighties. This exuberant novel cemented Wolfe's reputation as the foremost chronicler of his age.

The Bonfire of the Vanities.

Wolfe, Tom

New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1987. First edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Lengthily inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to editor David Kent in the year of publication, "To David Kent with thanks for a grand time and much high living in Toronto Tom Wolfe December 4, 1987." Fine in a fine price-clipped dust jacket. A nice association. The Bonfire of the Vanities is a novel, but it is based on the same sort of detailed on-scene reporting as Wolfe's great nonfiction bestsellers, The Right Stuff, Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. And it is every bit as eye-opening in its achievements. It is a big, panoramic story of the metropolis-the kind of fiction strangely absent from our literature in the second half of this century-that reinforces Tom Wolfe's reputation as the foremost chronicler of the way we live in America. "A big, bitter, funny, craftily plotted book that grabs you by the lapels and won't let go" (The New York Times Book Review). Basis for the 1990 film adaptation starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith.

The Bonfire of the Vanities

Wolfe, Tom

NY: Farrar Straus and Company, 1988. This is Tom Wolfe's 11th book and some say at his best It is a unique copy being inscribed to a famous NY lamp designer on the front free endpaper, Wolfe has noted: "My hat (drawing of a hat] is off to ______with many thanks Tom Wolfe." Wolfe has drawn a hat about 3 and 1/2 inches by 3 and a 1/2 inches including the expression of diaganal lines to show brightness or movement - and colored in the hat band and rim in green - filling it in light green crayon in those spots. A very flourishing Caligraphy and extremely outstanding large signature. In fact, The inscription and drawing take up the whole page.. Signed by the Author. 1st Edition, 12th Printing. Hardback. Fine/Fine/protected in Mylar. Illus. by Wolfe, Tom (Special). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

"Sherman McCoy, the central figure of Tom Wolfe's first novel, is a young investment banker with a fourteen-room apartment in Manhattan. When he is involved in a freak accident in the Bronx, prosecutors, politicians, the press, the police, the clergy, and assorted hustlers high and low close in on him, licking their chops and giving us a gargantuan helping of the human comedy of New York in the last years of the twentieth century." "In 1962, Wolfe left Washington for New York City, taking a position with the New York Herald Tribune as a general assignment reporter and feature writer. The editors of the Herald Tribune, including Clay Felker of the Sunday section supplement New York magazine, encouraged their writers to break the conventions of newspaper writing. During the 1962 New York City newspaper strike, Wolfe approached Esquire magazine about an article on the hot rod and custom car culture of Southern California. He struggled with the article until finally a desperate editor, Byron Dobell, suggested that Wolfe send him his notes so they could piece the story together. Wolfe procrastinated until, on the evening before the article was due, he typed a letter to Dobell explaining what he wanted to say on the subject, ignoring all journalistic conventions. Dobell's response was to remove the salutation "Dear Byron" from the top of the letter and publish it intact as reportage." .
