About This Item

(Cape Town: Struikhof Publishers, 1990) 0947458255. 4to; original blue boards, lettered in silver gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 179; full-colour reproductions of the artists' work, with accompanying descriptions. Dustwrapper slightly edgeworn; trace of foxing. Very good condition. "What is a South African artist? What qualities in art are important, so as to justify the inclusion of paintings from such a divergence of backgrounds? In their introduction the authors explore the values and beliefs of South African society past and present and how these have been reflected in the art of this varied and divided country. Each of the paintings - all are reproduced in full colour - is accompanied by a short commentary giving biographical details about the artist, an interpretation of the work and an assessment of the artist's achievements." .
