1514 RARE Parthenice Mariana Carmelite Mantuanus Hagiography Badius P. Incunable

Baptista Mantuanus was a Carmelite poet whose 15th-century works were influential during the Protestant Reformation. Perhaps the most influential of his works was 'Parthenice Mariana' – a collection of hagiographic poems each of which honored the lives church fathers, Catholic saints and theologians, classical writers and philosophers, mythical heroes, and iconic biblical figures. Notable names include:
• the Virgin Mary
• Catherine of Alexandria
• Hippolytus of Rome
• Euripides
• Jesus Christ
• Hercules
• Hesiod
• Polybius
• And many more (see photos of the table for a complete list of contents)
These poems would become the basis for a new style of writing – the epic poem on religious subjects which heavily influenced Erasmus and John Milton.

This incredibly rare 1514, post-incunable printing of Mantuanus's "Parthenice" features two sets of commentary – one from Sebastian Murrho and the other… Read More

1548 Rodolphus Agricola De Inventione Dialectica Dutch Humanism Rhetoric & Logic

Rudolph Agricola was a 15th-century Dutch humanist primarily remembered for his best book 'De Inventione Dialectica". Agricola spent much of his career in education, teaching various subjects and fields; however, his lessons were rooted in rhetoric and language dialect. This propelled him to write his book "On Dialectical Invention" which argued for the use for rhetoric and logic in all facets of education. According to Hamilton,
"The significance of De inventione dialectica for the history of argumentation is that it assimilated the art of dialectic to that of rhetoric. Agricola focused on the topics rather than the analytics of Aristotle and on Cicero."

This 1548 edition is exceedingly rare, especially in the Americas. Only one copy is found in any institution in the Western Hemisphere, per the USTC.

Description:
1517 ALDINE Martial Epigrams Roman Literature Corruption in Rome Post Incunable

"I live in a little cell, with a window that won't even close,
In which Boreas himself would not want to live."
– Martial, Epigrams

Martial was a 1st-century Roman poet from Spain most-known for his 'Epigrams.' This important, early piece of Roman literature expresses details of life in Rome focusing in on the brutal daily life during the Roman Empire. Martial describes living conditions of Rome, corrupt physicians and senators, cruel treatment of slaves, and secrets and rumors of emperors. Because of the style of Martial's writing, he is often considered the first insult comic, as he used humor to disguise his disdain for the life with which he was so familiar.

This incredibly rare and valuable 1517 post-incunable edition of Martial was published by the famed Aldine printing house.

Description:
1579 PLUTARCH Parallel Lives Latin Alexander the Great Pericles Xylander Vellum

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled."
― Plutarch

'Plutarch's Lives' or 'Parallel Lives' is one of the most important and comprehensive collection of biographies of famous Greek and Roman figures. Plutarch was not so much focused on providing a historical account of these famous individuals as much as he was seeking to write of the type of person they were and the life in which they lived. He focuses on Alexander the Great, Romulus and Remus, Demosthenes, Cicero, Brutus, Julius Caesar, and many other important figures.

This rare 1579 edition was edited and translated by Wilhelm Xylander, a notable German scholar. Xylander was well known for his commentary and edits of Greek and Roman masters including Cassius, Strabo, Marcus Aurelius, and Euclid.
