Description:
One page letter (10 3/4" x 8 3/4") to Gilbert Dobbs discussing several problems and thanking him for problems received and potential future problems. Also discusses a book about to be published. Signed by Gamage.Giblert Dobbs (1867-1941) had composed an astonishing number of 2,500 problems, great numbers of them very charming and attractive pieces. He loved the simpler combinations of pure or model mates in three-move form, and turned out literally hundreds of examples, which one could always counted upon to be well worth the solving. Dobbs went on to become a minister in Georgia. (ACB: 1941)Frederick Gamage (1881-1956) was born in Westborough, MA. The active periods in Gamage's career as a problemist have been relatively brief. He composed his first problem in 1901 and withdrew from active chess in 1914. This early period was interrupted months and even years at a time, a feverish outburst of productivity around 1910 resulting in some of his best work, especially in the three-move field. In 1937 he…

Good. John Ogilby (1600 - 1676). 17th Century Copper-engraved Strip-style Map. The Road from St Davids com Pembroke to Holywell com Flint. 35.5 by 45 cm (14 x17.75 inches)
As the road winds through the Welsh hills and along the coast, the towns of St Davids, Fishguard, Newport, Cardigan and Port Talbot are encountered along the way.
Features: Shows rivers with named bridges, the sea when it is near the route, hills (represented upside down when the road goes down them). Towns and other settlements passed through are shown, and churches are marked and distinguished by tower or spire. County boundaries are shown, and the distance from the outset is written along the route. Some darkening in margins with small chips and tears; very good. Background Information:
John Ogilby (1600 - 1676) was the first cartographer to make use of strip-maps for roads. A Scottish translator, impresario and cartographer. Best known for publishing the first British road atlas, he was also a successful translator, noted for publishing his work in handsome illustrated editions.
In his 2008 television series Terry Jones claimed that one of the map's purposes was to facilitate a Catholic takeover of the kingdom, an interpretation that one historian agreed was 'significant and highly plausible'. Ref. JICS archive; wiki

Ickes, Harold. Columnists and Calumnists. No place of publication stated: No publisher stated, 1939. 8 1/2 x 11 (216 x 280 mm) sheets, [1], 16 pages, printed on rectos only and stapled at top left. Advance copy of an acerbic speech by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes, in which he levels sustained, withering criticism of certain newspaper columnists (or "calumnists," as he calls them). He singles out Westbrook Pegler as well as General Hugh Johnson, both fierce opponents of President Roosevelt. (Johnson worked briefly in the Roosevelt administration but was fired because of his Fascist sympathies.) On the other hand, he praises the great Heywood Broun: "Here is a genial philosopher who declines to take himself too seriously and yet one who never pulls his punches, even if he chuckles as he lands on an eagerly outstretched chin."
His view of Dorothy Thompson is decidedly mixed. On the one hand, he calls her "a sincere and earnest lady who is trying to cover too much ground by setting… Read More

Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")
