Description:
New York: Cleanliness Institute, 1928 Small booklet printed in black on green paper, closed tear and small chip from rear cover. Deceptively, this little book has nothing to do with magic, but rather each "magic trick" is actually an act of personal hygiene. The author and artist take a humorous approach which should have appealed to youngsters. This was part of a series of pamphlets created by the Health Institute, who employed comedian "Happy" Goldsmith to make their message more appealing to a young audience. Two copies located on OCLC (the copy at Harvard is part of a grouping of Cleanliness Institute publications). See: Vegetables on Parade by Naomi Rogers, pg. 40 of Children's Health in Historical Perspective, by Warsh, Cheryl Krasnick.. Very Good. Illus. by George Callahan. 16mo.

Description:
The three letters indicate Steve Allen's more serious side on issues of religion and philosophy. The collection on Steve Allen's letterhead includes (1) a type one-page letter signed to Donald K. Sharpes on September 7, 1959. Allen explains his intent in the articles in Look Magazine was to shock Christians into realizing their hypocrisy. (2) a letter of November 27, 1959, where he explains he has digested the contents of his previous letter and he intends to answer with a fuller communication; and (3) August 2, 1960, where he provides a long two-page typed letter his response. He explains that he is a neighbor of a philosopher or a scientist, but he believes man has a soul. He is puzzled by the horrors of creation such as children born on occasion without a brain or other deformities. Do these little beings have souls? He goes on to say that his autobiography Mark it and Strike It will be published in a few weeks which will mainly deal only with the trivialities of his television career. He closes by…

Description:
In the "Just Plain Weird" category, consider the man who from about 1925 on baffled the medical and scientific community with his ability to GROW. That's right, this famed sideshow performer appeared to grow inches taller on stage -- hence his nickname, "The Man Who Grows Before Your Eyes." Through the 1950s, Willard continued to amaze and confound, appearing on shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" (6 April 1958). What he signs here is as off-the-wall as what he did: a folded-down promotional broadside, single sheet (printed recto and verso), 27" X 18¼" (folds down to 9" X 6 3/4"), Grand Rapids, MI, n.y. [ca. 1934 or earlier]. Near fine. The front panel, which reads "The / Complete / Refrigerator / LEONARD / a name with more than a half / century of / REFRIGERATION BACKGROUND" in bold orange and black, bears his handsome large inscription in a blank area: "Clarence E. Willard / 'The Man Who Grows' / 1934."…

Description:
London: Bemrose & Sons , 1881. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket (as published). 5.5" X 8.5. A classic study on the origins of place names in the English county of Derbyshire. This copy has had a tough life, the spine strip is missing and both hinges are weak. The pages themselves are all soundly bound. The book includes some related ephemera, including a letter and several newspaper cuttings, mainly from the 1920s. (Includes the author's obituary). Some cuttings are stuck to the pages, but all text is still quite readable. There is the signature of a previous owner (William S Longbottom) at the top of the title page. William Longbottom was better known by his pen name of Horace Weir, the author of many works on the history of Derbyshire. Please note that this is a 19th century produced copy and not a modern reproduction. All orders processed and shipped promptly from the UK, usually within 24 hours. Please call or email with your questions about this book. Not available for economy…
