Most pages contain one or more brightly coloured paintings ( most have been painted on thick sheets of rice paper) . Contents include: One plate with ink stamp to border: "Indian Settlement. Printed In Oil Colours By G. Baxter. The Inventor And Patentee. 11 & 12 Northampton Square. Licences Granted To Work The Process". 5 Portraits of Emperors on pith paper; 8 Flower paintings on pith paper; 17 Character paintings on pith paper; 3 pages with 4 small chinese characters painted on pith paper and laid-down; 3 pages with two chinese characters painted on pith, cut out and laid-down on the page; 11 water-colour / gouache paintings of chinese buildings and rivers, boats etc. (four darkend around the edges); 3 line paintings of chinese workers on rice paper (creased). In total there are 63 illustrations of which 12 have suffered some loss. A remarkable collection of 19th century oriental art. From family records Charles Stuart is believed to be : Charles James Fife Stuart . Birth 1817 in Valenciennes, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France . Death 8 Dec 1875 in Bahia, Brazil . He married Caroline Georgina Tyndall in 1844 in Dorset, England. He was already a Secretary in the Oriental Bank and took on various posts in China and India, being promoted to the position of Inspector for the region. Records also list: Smollett James Drummond Campbell. Birth 12 Dec 1812 . Death 13th April 1854 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India . He is recorded as being Manager of the Oriental Bank of Hong Kong, in 1846. However, by August 1846 he is recorded as being the Manager of the Oriental Bank In Bombay, India at the announcement of his marriage to Mary Adelaide Tyndall the sister of Caroline Georgina Tyndall. .

Bound in between wooden boards, title label blank. Chinese ownership marks endpaper. Modern professional Japanese paper repairs to spine. Very attractive album. A charming collection of Chinese pictures showing a variety of domestic, court and mythological scenes. This album contains no clues as to the purpose of these delightful images. There is no title or accompanying text and they are as is typical of these types of illustrations unsigned. They may have been produced for the tourist trade or maybe as a gift book? .
