About This Item

Amsterdam: I(oshue) Ottens, 1667. A more complete title for this copper-plate etching with two views is: Afbeeldingh van de stadt en revier van Rochester, Chetham, etc. Very good, heavy paper, fold at center (with lesser right sided vertical crease) b&w (as issued) detailed and decorative engraving of this late stage following the Dutch attack at Medway, led by Dutch Lieutenant Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, under the supervision of Dutch politician, the Grand Pensionary of Holland Johan de Witt. Of those online entries for this pair of engravings, all I have found are attributable to publisher N. Visscher, and this is the only one seen with the engraved attribution to Ottens. The two images measure 40 x 50 cm (together), with margins close. This is quite a striking piece representing this segment of Dutch and English military conflict and history. Ref: Landwehr, R. de H. the etcher p.55; F.M. 2256; Atlas v.Stolk 2358. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) was clerk of the English Navy Board during the Second Dutch War, and his papers on this conflict have been published, calling England "mad for war" at the time. . First Edition Thus. View (Engraved).
