About This Item

Royal Engineers , 1880. Virtually unique as presented here, apparently intended as a private publication for the Royal Corps of Engineers, with all 6 articles (Proposed Prussian Organization for the Duties of Troops at Sieges translated by HE Rawson, 26; Prussian Sapping Regulation translated by HA Gun, 40pp; Prussian Etappen Regulations, translated by D O'Brien, 72pp; Elements of Fortress Warfare, translated by CM Watson, 72pp; Principles of Fortification, translated by H Schaw & H Pilkington, 210pp; Prussian Pontoon Regulations, translated by HA Gun, 76pp). All 6 of these are bound together in half red calf with pebbled boards and marbled fore-edges, issued over a period of years ending in 1880. Numerous folding plates are present within this first volume, with some of original paper wraps present (these were apparently issued singly in original form). The covers on this initial volume are very good, with hinges a bit tender, and gilt-lettered banded spine. The second volume is a cloth map case with leather spine, labelled "Fortification Atlas" and containing 25 numbered folding plates of various sizes dealing with various elements of military fortification. The maps are on thin paper, generally very good, with a few pinpoint separations a crease junctures, showing all sorts of detail pertaining to fortification use. Also within this separate case is a 66 page explanatiory volume: FORTIFICATION ATLAS, by Captaqin Wagner, Prussian Engineers (Edition of 1871 chiefly, but a few plates of later date), Translated...by...Gore Booth, ...James, ...Revised by Colonel H. Schaw. This explanatory volume goes plate by plate, including discussion of many annotations. The booklet, on it's cover, stipulates that, "This Translation has been permitted by Captain wagner on condition that it is only for Officers of the Royal Engineers, and of the Staff College, and that it is never sold through a Bookseller.". This set of bound publications and accompanying map case is, at the least, very scarce as presented here, and a very interesting piece of what must have been confidential military history. Lennox had served in the Crimea, at Sebastopol and Inkerman, and was apparently of some note as a big game hunter while he was in Ceylon. . Half-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
