The second part bears a separate title page. Complete with 23 lithograph plates, including twenty-one double-page plates and two folding plates. One of the plates is a map; the remainder are diagrams of military movements. Original publisher's illustrated light boards, with a lithograph decoration on spine and a different lithograph vignette on each cover. [14.3 cm.] Housed in original cardboard slipcase covered in marbled paper, with printed paper spine label, and semicircular cut-out at head of front and rear panels (to ease removal of the book from case). A very good or better copy. Hint of wear to spine ends. Moderate soiling to small portion of each board (corresponding to cut-outs in slipcase), with no impact on illustrations. Light scattered foxing, with almost no impact on plates. Slipcase is lightly rubbed with some slight wear, but sound. Ownership inscription of Frederick Barne (1800-1886), who served as a British M.P. (1830-1832), on inside of front board, dated Hanover, 1824. SECOND EDITION, ENLARGED, being the first with "Elemente der Bewegungskunst eines Reuter-Regiments" appended. The first edition was issued the preceding year. Friedrich Wilhelm von Bismarck (1783-1860), of Württemberg, distinguished himself as a cavalry officer with the French forces during the Napoleonic Wars. He was responsible for the post-war reorganization of the cavalry in his native country, and later became a statesman and diplomat. The first edition in English appeared in 1827, under the title: "Lectures on the Tactics of Cavalry and Elements of Manoeuvre for a Cavalry Regiment.
