Camp Custer, Battle Creek, MI: T.F Mock, 1918. Original panoramic photograph, 6 1/2" x 42 1/4", unframed, rolled. Near Fine, faint creases near ends, scant light soiling rear of photo. Stamped in blue ink rear -"Passed by Intelligence Section Office, Chief of Staff". Written in ink rear -" 355th Battalion Q.M.C., Camp Custer, Mich. T.F. Mock Sept. 29, 1918". Unclear whether this is in Mock's handwriting. Theodore F. Mock was listed as the Camp Custer Photographer in David V. Tinder's "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" published by Clements Library, 2013. Camp Custer, at Battle Creek, Michigan, had over 100,000 US Army troops pass through its doors between 1917-1919. Sept. 29th, 1918 was the day in 1918, after a 56-hour-long bombardment, Allied forces breached the so-called Hindenburg Line, the last line of German defenses on the Western Front during World War I. SCARCE photograph of Negro troops during World War I, with many interesting poses by the soldiers (including a pair in boxing pose !) making this a unique piece of African-Americana and U.S. Military history !. First Printing. Photograph. Near Fine.

Description:
[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1963].. Original glossy double-weight gelatin silver print from negative, 14 x 11" (inclusive of margins). Numbered in pencil on verso. About fine. An original print of one of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present image is a beautiful 3/4-length photograph of two Zulu tribeswomen in ceremonial dress, including feathered headgear, small shields and short spears, with partial figures of other women in similar dress in the background. The image is identified in pencil on the verso as "No. 109" in the series. Although this project is not as widely known as Karsh's formal portraiture, examples of the resulting images have featured prominently in both museum and print retrospectives of his career.

The present image, is an informal portrait of future political leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi in character as Zulu King Cetshwayo kaMpande, standing in front of his house, with his mother, Constance Mhlungu, in the foreground, playing a tall stringed instrument. The image is identified as "No. 479" in the series, and captioned: "Constance Mhlungu, Zulu princess and musician-composer, with her son, Chief Butalezi [sic], on the steps of their home in Zululand." Composite photographic image depicting the Chicago lakefront and early planes. The sender's and receiver's details filled out in black ink, and four landmarks noted on the image in the same hand. Marks from stamp, some toning and spotting of the verso, creasing and wear, particularly near the original folds (which are fragile) and at the corners and slightly affecting the image, small tape repair to one corner on the verso. Very good condition. A striking, oversized panoramic postcard photomontage depicting one of the most important aviation events prior to the First World War, the August 1911 International Aviation Meet at Grant Park in Chicago. The Chicago meet was the largest airshow held up to that time, only eight years after the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers.
