First Edition - one of the deluxe issue of seventy specially bound, numbered and signed copies printed on handmade paper - this copy unsigned and marked 'Out of Series'. Green parchment-vellum, lettered in gold at the spine. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Illustrated with fifteen full-page wood-engravings, eighteen tailpieces and two vignettes by C.F.Tunnicliffe. Boards lifting a fraction and vellum quite faded at the backstrip. Internally in fine state. No dust wrapper, as issued. One of the scarcest editions in the Williamson canon. This deluxe issue was originally to be limited to fifty copies but the print run was increased quite late in the publication process necessitating the disposal of the first gathering which Williamson had already signed. Top edges lightly spotted and dust soiled, else lovely crisp copies in non-price-clipped dust wrappers, the first designed by Andy Warhol (his last wrapper design - pop super-stardom was just around the corner), a little tanned, soiled and chafed at extremities with two or three tiny portions of loss to the spine ends and two or three small areas of staining; the second wrapper, designed by William Belcher, is very lightly dust marked in several places. Second impression of the first edition, issued three months after the original impression. 319pp + lxiv publisher's catalogue at the rear. Original publisher's two-tone boards, lettered in gilt at the spine and in the black at the upper board. Top edge dust soiled and with a touch of light marking to the cloth in two or three places. Spine ends and corner tips a little rubbed, and with some browning to the endpapers and a touch of occasional marking to the leaf margins. A nice crisp bright copy. Forster's first book was originally published in October 1905 with a print run of 1,050 copies; this second impression followed three months later with a print run of 526 copies..
