Dahlgren deemed this French work important enough to translate in 1838. In fact, the so-called Paixhans Gun, developed in the 1820s, was the first to fire exploding shells. Dahlgren understood immediately the advantages this over iron shot, and writes approvingly of the "bomb Cannon" in his preface. Scarce. According to Worldcat only six libraries hold copies. Bound in original yellow printed wrappers, with the cover title "Shot-Shell Practice in the French Navy.". Very good condition.
