Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. Covers rubbed, closed tears to plates, some spotting to text, early ink underlining to one page. An enlarged edition of the first edition of 1804. Two folding frontispiece plates showing a view and floor plan of the hospital. 65, [1]; 74 pp. 8vo. The founding of the New York Hospital, the second oldest hospital in New York City, was inspired by Samuel Bard's seminal Discourse upon the Duties of a Physician (1769). Wartime delays pushed the hospital's opening to 1791. Originally founded as a medical hospital, it eventually focused on treating the insane. After several moves and re-incorporations, the hospital is now part of New York-Presbyterian. Sabin attributes authorship to John Murray, Jr. or Thomas Eddy. The work includes the Charter (1771), two acts of the state legislature (1806, 1810), "By-laws and regulations" for the hospital and a 64-page catalogue of the hospital's library. Norman 1584; Shaw & Shoemaker 23958 & 23555; Sabin 55480 & 54482. Provenance: Haskell F. Norman (his bookplate)
