Edward Jeffery, London, 1806. First Edition. Softcover. Poor Condition/Poor. protective dust-jacket over original grey paper covers; title page followed by list of titles printed for E. Jeffery & his advertisement . An Account of Two remarkable Trials for Murder, in the Counties of Gloucester and Essex. The first related by Sir Thomas Overbury, Knight, of Burton, in Gloucestershire, and the other by that very learned Antiquary, the late Joseph Strutt, F. S. A. Wherein are recorded some of the most wonderful Occurrences which have been exhibited in the Criminal Jurisprudence of any Country. The first of these cases has been printed before, being that of William Harrison, steward to Lady Viscountess Campden, supposed to be murdered by Perry, for which he, his brother and mother, were hanged; and, two years after, Harrison returned from transportation to Turkey. Mr. Jefferey inadvertently affirms, that "this event is said to have occasioned the law lo prevent any persons being executed for murder unless the dead body of the person supposed to be murdered is found.” (there is no such law in being.) The other is an undated discovery, by Mr. Strutt, of a murder by a skull with a rusty nail in Chelmsford churchyard the perpetrators of which were convicted on his evidence. His style is rather peculiar; he talks of "taking the skull in his hand, and wrapping the end of his mantle about it;" and of the prisoner "tearing his tunics by attempting to escape from the prison." (N.B. - this copy is lacking four pages from the account of the second case) First Thus.
