About This Item

Farmland, Indiana: W. C. West, 1896. First Edition. Near fine in its original pebbled brown cloth covered boards with somewhat faded text on the spine and with coper colored text on the spine. A 16mo of 6 3/8 by 4 1/4 inches with a few minor stray ink marks on the front end sheets and a written number "11600" on the bottom margin of the first page of contents. Otherwise the contents are clean, free of any other markings and free of foxing and tanning. Without a dust jacket. The text of the book was originally published in a series of articles in 1895 in a journal (Enterprise). This is the first version of the title in book form. This is the narrative of Reuben Cole Shaw who joined a band of 50 members of the Mount Washington Mining Company to traverse the continent from Boston to California in 1849 to explore the gold fields there. Lead by their competent fur trapper/mountain man, Joseph Thing, they made the journey on horseback and pack-mule. Howes considers this title to be "quite scarce". Decker states that only 200 copies of this first edition were printed "which were intended to be a premium to new subscribers." (Howes, S349, Cowan p580, Kurutz, 571a, Decker VI 675)
