Collation, engraved title, 33 engravings within the text, lacking 8 leaves from Kalender, and prelims, Table complete, Chronologie complete, Lacking 3 leaves from the main body of text, pages, 1,2,141,142,605,606, Title page detached, trimmed,laid down,with loss,prelims and last page trimmed with loss of some text, 1 page stained, first circa 100 pages have some worming and brittleness to top inner margin, not affecting text, text block slightly weak. Generally most of the text is in very good clean condition. Binding lacking spine, top board detached. . Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

Volume 1 title within woodcut border, 3 (of 4) woodcut plates, folding woodcut table repaired with small loss on recto and larger loss on verso , final leaf with all margins renewed, woodcuts in text, vol. 1 title renewed in inner margin; volume 2 with folding woodcut of Windsor Castle, final 2 leaves repaired in margins with loss of a few letters, lacks A2, vol. 2 ends at p.788; volume 3 title cut round and mounted, a few corners worn, a few small repairs (e.g. p.601 with loss of a few letters), 1 folding woodcut plate (at p. 503), occasional spotting, soiling and discoloration, final leaf laid down.

Volume 1 is from 1641 and is 1033 pages long, Vol. 2 is from 1631 and is 788 pages long, volume 3 is from 1641 and is 1030 pages long. VERY SCARCE AND HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE! Description:
London: John Daye, 1583. Fourth edition of Foxe's Book of Martyrs (as it was later known), and the last to be published in his lifetime. The first English edition was published in 1563. Folio, 2 volumes bound into one in full near contemporary full brown calf over beveled boards elaborately stamped and paneled in blind, rebacked, seven raised bands to the spine, later brass fixtures to the front and rear panels, text in two columns, numerous woodcut illustrations throughout. Text lacks preliminaries and title-page, and first five leaves remounted and partially restored (with significant loss to text), and final twenty leaves with significant chipping. In very good condition. A well-preserved example of this monumental work, published over four centuries ago.
