Addresses upon the American Road… 1948-1950 by Hoover, Herbert - 1951

First edition of a volume of nearly 50 post-WWII addresses and writings by Hoover on foreign and domestic policies, affirming his continuing "enthusiasm for efficiency in government and his passion for reduced costs," inscribed by him, "The good wishes of Herbert Hoover."

This volume, one of a series documenting Hoover's economic, domestic and foreign policies, contains "48 speeches, articles, letters, memoranda and remarks… beginning with a policy statement and a memorandum with respect to the Hoover Commission, both dated October 20, 1947, and ending with a radio address on December 20, 1950." These writings offer clear evidence of how Hoover's "enthusiasm for efficiency in government and his passion for reduced costs made him a vigorous, exacting, and yet tactful leader… Of major importance are Hoover's views on various aspects of foreign policy… especially in his address at the dedication of the William Allan White Memorial [68-77], and in his broadcasts of October 19 [91-99] and December 20, 1950 [203-10]. These are notable contributions to the great debate over foreign policy… It is in these addresses that Hoover develops his theory of 'Gibraltarian' for the Western Hemisphere" (Berdahl, Western Political Quarterly V:1, 174-6).
