NOTE ON EDITIONS: Joel Tyler Headley published 4 editions of this work in the 19th century. The 1st (1849 - reprinted 1853 and 1861) and 2nd (1864) by Baker and Scribner, with 288 pages. The 3rd (1869) and 4th (1875 - reprinted 1882) editions were "New and Enlarged" with 18 additional chapters, published by one of the variously named successor Scribner companies. There have also of course been many modern reprints by other publishers. You can tell the edition and printing by the date on the bottom of the title page. This is the second printing of the fourth edition, which includes an 1879 map at the rear.
