Published by William Heinemann, 1912. 1st edition.. Hardback. Good. Illustrated by Rackham, Arthur. Good condition with no wrapper. Limited edition of 1450 numbered copies. White buckram, pictorial gilt to front cover and spine. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. 13 superb colour plates mounted on heavy brown paper with lettered tissue-guards. 53 drawings, 19 full-page. 223 pages. 11.5 x 9". SIGNED by Rackham. This is copy no. 511. Spine and corners bumped. Unfortunately the cloth is grubby, damp stains to rear edges which show through on the pastedown. The front free-endpaper has been removed and a label has been removed from the pastedown. There is light damp staining to page edges. All plates present and in fine condition although some of the tissue-guards are lightly browned. There is a little bit of foxing but not much. A reasonable copy of a scarce book. [R]

Aesop, known only for the genre of fables ascribed to him, was a slave in the mid-sixth century BC in Greece. He is assumed to have written many of these curious moral parables, and they have been added to and translated into many languages since they were first collected.
