Hand coloured plates heightened with gum (38 with 154 birds shown in groups from 2-6 per plate) by Victor Adam +uncoloured frontis portrait of Buffon +pretty hand coloured engraved titlepage by Pauquet /Rouget sc. all with tissue guards.. Small quarto plum roan spine extra gilt compartments & faux bands with cloth sides (tips a bit worn/rebacked with old spine relaid/cloth rubbed). Portrait Frontis +hand coloured titlepage +printed titlepage +Portrait +xxiii [1]p blank +312pp. Text pages with some foxing, more so to first & last pages. Plates mostly clean & white but a few have pale edge foxing. Two tissue guards torn, one at p17 lost. The plates are all beautifully hand coloured and heightened with gum.

1837 Memoirs of John Mytton HUNTING Sports Color Illustrated Alken & Rawlins

Charles Apperley's book 'Memoirs of the life of the late John Mytton' is a fascinating biography with beautiful color illustrations depicting different hunting scenes, which fell in line with Apperley's work writing for the Sporting Magazine of London.
"This is not a work of fiction, for John Mytton, a rather inglorious character for a biography, was a hard-living, hard-drinking country squire of Halston, Shropshire, capable of the utmost physical endurance, and ready to accept any wager to walk, shoot or ride against any man. Many of his feats are recorded and graphically delineated, including the climax of his folly in setting his nightshirt on fire to cure a hiccough" (Martin Hardie).

Charles Lanman's "Adventures in the Wilds of the United States" is a brilliant, mid-19th-century account of his travels across America. It is one of the best travelogues to describe the middle part of America, from Florida to the Mississippi River into southern Canada. Lanman condensed a number of his earlier works into this first American edition – notes on angling in Canada, hunting in Quebec, and discovery of the source of the Potomac River.
It should be noted that this first American edition includes material not included in the first British edition and features 12 full-page engravings.
