Description:
Great Britian, England, UK.: TANDEM Books., 1974. Book. Illus. by Painted Cover Art!. Fine. Soft cover. First Edition By This Publisher.. 157 pages. " The fourteen chilling tales in this collection were written while A.N.L. ('Tim') Munby was a prisoner in Germany during World War II. --Munby's spectres haunt locations as diverse as a Bristol bookshop, a Tudor Hall, the Snowdonian mountains, the peaceful Herefordshire countryside, a Book of Hours, and the remote Cuillin mountain range of the Isle of Skye. --Munby skilfully brings his own specialised antiquarian knowledge to each of the stories in this, his own tribute to the great M.R. James. The Alabaster Hand is recognised as a genuine cornerstone of supernatural literature --- stories include: Herodes Redivivus; Inscription; The Alabaster Hand; Topley Place Sale; Tudor Chimney; Christmas Game; White Sack; Four-Poster; Negro's Head; Tregannet Book Hours; Encounter in Mist; Lectern; Number Seventy-Nine; Devil's Autograph"…

Fourteen tales of the supernatural, written (per the author's Foreword) "between 1943 and 1945 in a prison-camp just outside the ancient walled town of Eichstätt in Upper Franconia." Sez the jacket blurb: "Although written by a scholar, the style is pleasantly urbane and idiomatic and should therefore have universal appeal. Horror is not piled upon horror for the sake of raising the reader's hackles. Instead, an effect of complete normality is…

Description:
London: Denis Dobson, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. Stories written while the author was a prisoner of war in Germany, 1943-1945...Intelligent stories, with curious antiquarian information, yet with formal problems. The author has difficulty in closing his stories and the reader is often left dissatisfied."-Bleiler, Guide to Supernatural Fiction, 1206. Some of the stories have bookish themes. In one, an antiquarian bookseller is also a murderer; another centers on a medieval book of hours, a third is about a customer whose attempt to order an occult manuscript from a dealer's catalog. First edition (states "First published..." on the copyright page). But for a previous owner's name on the front free endpaper, a near fine copy in a very good dust jacket tanned at the spine and with small chips at the edges. An attractive copy overall.
