Valentine & Sons; Miss B. Gleeson, Killarney: Ca. 1900, 1900 Oblong 4to. 16 leaves. Photo illustrations. 22 cm. Thin leather covered boards decorated in gilt. Sun faded. On the front cover is "Published by Miss B. Gleeson, 8 Henn Street Killarney". The patriotic Gleeson sisters were loyal to the IRA and their shop was burnt out during the Irish War of Independence. the shop attracted the unwelcome attention of the British forces, including the infamous Black and Tans. The latter threatened to burn the shop down unless the sisters removed their name in Irish from above the shop front. This order was resisted. However, at the last minute a neighbour, afraid for the safety of her own premises, used green paint to obscure the Irish name. The Black and Tans subsequently daubed B and T , for Black and Tans, on the shutters. The Gleeson's shop was frequented by Republicans including Thomas Ashe, Austin Stack and Éamon de Valera. A decorative album of black and white illustrations of the scenic lakes of Killarney and Glengarriff in Southern Ireland. Intricately drawn and presented, these illustrations show views of Glena Bay, Ross Castle, Eagle's Nest Mountain and the lakes. There are a total of twenty-seven views within this copy. In decorative cloth. Externally, there is fading and rubbing to the extremities and boards, with some marks to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound with bright clean pages. Very Good
