About This Item

GORDON, Caroline. Aleck Maury, Sportsman. Orig. cloth. New York: Scribner's, 1934. 8vo. First edition, first issue binding, of the author's second book. Southern author George Marion O'Donnell's copy with his signature on front pastedown. O'Donnell has struck through the title on the half-title and title page and emended it to "The Life and Passion of Aleck Maury," under which title the novel appeared in England. O'Donnell was a close friend of both Caroline Gordon and her husband, Allen Tate. He was associated with the foremost Southern writers of the day, particularly the Fugitives and Agrarians of Vanderbilt University, and his 1939 essay "Faulkner's Mythology" was one of the first serious assessments of Faulkner's literary achievement. A significant association copy of one of Gordon's scarcest books. Spine and edges of cloth faded as usual with this title, still a very good copy in nice pictorial dustjacket with only minor edgewear.
