Each volume with red morocco title label, decorated and lettered in gilt. Some rubbing and chipping to most volumes and a few hinges cracked but all still holding. Overall an attractive set of eighteenth century bindings. Previous owners bookplate on front paste downs.

Hardcovers rebound in 3/4 burgundy morocco leather with raised bands on the spines and burgundy marbled paper-covered boards. Elaborate gilt tooling in the compartments on the spines. Top edges gilt. Light rubbing to the bindings overall. Some of the raised bands are a little more heavily rubbed. Matching marbled endpapers. The text is a little toned but is generally clean. A very attractive set. Stated Second Edition on the title pages. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was an early sociologist, traveller, philosopher and feminist. She is often regarded as the first female sociologist. Five pages have a small tear to the fore edge of the page, without any loss, otherwise a lovely bright clean copy in a fine, attractive leather binding by Bayntun of Bath. Full red polished calf. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments decorated in gilt. Blue and green labels, ruled and lettered in gilt. Double gilt ruled border on boards. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A wonderful copy of this scarce and beautifully illustrated edition.

Hardcovers nicely re-bound in 20th Century 3/4 red morocco with marbled paper covered boards. Five raised spine bands. Bindings are in very nice condition, showing only light wear. New endpapers. This the illustrated edition. Dated 1886 on the copyright page of each volume. Text is a little toned but generally clean. A few award cards from the early 20th century have been placed loosely within a couple of the volumes. An exceptional set with great shelf appeal.

Binding is rubbed and bumped with some scuffing on the boards. Hinges are secure. All edges marbled. Several pencil markings as well as a small library ink stamp on the title page. A piece of paper was laid between the title page and the Preface page, resulting in heavy browning on the Preface. The browning also affect the title page and a few pages after. The text is toned with occasional foxing. Text is in French. The title translates to "Of the Colonies and Particularly that of Saint-Domingue; Historical and Political Memory."
