About This Item

This vintage set of prints comes from the very first edition of Maria Kirk’s wonderful colour-plate version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1904 – well over 100 years ago. (I have provided a scan of the original book cover for reference purposes, below.)

All the illustrations include Alice herself, with various other characters also depicted: the Cheshire Cat, Duchess, Cook, pig, baby, flamingo, hedgehogs and playing-card gardeners. I will be including all the original captioned guards with the prints; one of the plates (the original frontispiece to the book) still has the captioned tissue guard attached.

Image area (including coloured border) approximately 6.3 x 4.5 inches (16 x 11.5 cm) each.
Paper size approximately 8 x 5.7 inches (20.3 x 14.4 cm). Image areas very clean, apart from small stain to Alice’s face. Gardener print with crease running up left-hand side of image; any other creases, tears and marks confined to margins, as per scans. Note that these plates have been salvaged from a copy in very poor condition – incomplete and past repair.
