About This Item

The First UK printing published by Allan Wingate, London in 1954. The hardback BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with just a little fading to the spine, light offsetting to the end-papers, one small neat penned name to the upper front end-paper and a small lightly rubbed area to the lower front edge. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition with some fading and toning to the spine. A very small stain to the verso of the lower spine tip which has very lightly come through to the front but is hardly discernible due to the toning of the spine. Some very light edge-wear with a few small closed tears but a much nicer example than usually encountered. The Mervyn Peake wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. This was the first UK printing of the book as opposed to the edition printed earlier in 1946 by Zephyr Books, Stockholm which was the first edition in the english language. This book with its 65 illustrations by Mervyn Peake rarely turns up in such collectible condition - the first copy that I have handled. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
