About This Item

NY: The MacMillan Company. Very Good- in Fair dust jacket. 1938. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. The book is at best only very good-. The corners are rubbed, and the spine has a vertical crease. However, there is much more to this book. First, it was given by Rachel to her mother, Lucy, in September, 1938. Rachel inscribed it: "Well, here it is! With love in September, 1938, R. F. P." on the fep. Opposite is the owner's note "Lucy A. Field, October 26, 1938." Rachel also signed it on the title page. Second, the book comes with two tattered dust jackets. One is the DJ all the books were issued with. The second has a note on the rear flap: "this is the jacket that was to be used originally. We like it, as it was Mrs. Field's design. But they decided to use the present one (? ? ) color." I am no expert, but that appears to be in her Mother's handwriting. The blurbs on the DJ's are identical. Also included are a photograph (a copy of which is also taped on one of the endpapers) , and holograph partial letter refering to family references in the book. The letter is either in Rachel's handwriting or her Mother's; they are similar. The book was purchased from a decendent of Rachel Field. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 596 pages; Signed by Author .
