About This Item

East Aurora, New York: The Roycroft Printing Shop. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1896. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. A light mark to the front cover, spine tail slightly bumped, bruise or dent to the head edge of the rear cover. Occasional, foxing to the pages, some pages foxed in the gutter at the head. ; In a periodical, Roycroft printed the first US appearance of George Bernard Shaw's essay on the institution of the church, primarily the Catholic Church, and churchgoers' reliance on organized religion. Although Shaw, via a postcard, had given Elbert Hubbard permission to publish this work, Shaw was horrified to find that Hubbard had taken liberties and edited the essay instead of printing it as it stood. Thereafter, Shaw disassociated himself from the Roycroft version, treated it as a piracy, and did not miss an opportunity to vilify Elbert Hubbard. From the essay, Shaw's thoughts on how drink, smoke, drugs, or the lack thereof, produce creative works, including sermons: " An exhibition of the cleverest men and women in London at five P. M, with their afternoon tea cut off, would shatter many illusions. Tea and coffee and cigarettes produce conversation; lager beer and pipes produce routine journalism; wine and gallantry produce brilliant journalism, essays and novels; brandy and cigars produce violently devotional or erotic poetry; morphia produces tragic exaltation (useful on the stage); and sobriety produces an average curate's sermon." The first appearance of this work was in the periodical The Roycroft Quarterly #2, thereafter issued in book form. This copy conforms to Ogle 89, V4, but for brown covers instead of the called-for gray. Ogle does not mention this variant being rebound remainders of the periodical, but there are unused binding perforations in the gutters, and the addition of endpapers, new title page without the periodical's advertisment on the verso, copyright page, and colophon. The rear does not have the periodical's 2 pages of advertisments. Nicely printed in "Romanesque" font with decorative "Kelmscott" initial capitals, some headings and devices printed in red, with wide margins. On laid paper with deckled fore edge. Quarter, white, fine buckram cloth spine with brown paper over boards, gilt title to front. Brown, wove paper pastedowns and endpapers. At least Very Good+ condition. A very clean copy with sharp corners, and a satiric essay of caustic wit.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; [4],40,[1] pages .
